A great product, better than the cheap stuff.

I usually buy the cheaper brands of horseradish, but this was on offer yesterday so I got this and some tartar sauce (both 250ml jars) for £1.50. Usually they retail at about £1.00 each so I thought this was a good deal.

A jar this size I think will last a good couple of months as I am the only who likes it in our house, but I do have it on a lot of things, it makes a cheese sandwich very tasty!

I did in fact have some last night, and I had forgotten how good the Colmans brand is. The packaging is actually a bit different to the one pictured, it actually has a black label with a picture of horseradish on.

The first thing I noticed when I scooped some of this out of the jar was it's consistency, it was so light and fluffy and reminded me of a mousse rather than the cheaper ones that ;look very thick and heavy, it looks very luxurious.

I don't know if there are different types of horseradish, but this was quite a mild flavour, I have had some that are really hot, but this was very creamy, it was subtle but full of that lovely horseradish flavour. There were small chunks of horseradish in the sauce that were clearly visible but not massive.

I don't know about all the nutritional info, as I only use a small amount, I don't really look at it on things like this, but I'm sure it can't be too bad unless you are eating a whole jar of it.

I was very impressed with this sauce, and I will definitely be sticking to Colmans in the future. The cheaper brands just aren't as light and fluffy as this. It was really lovely.

Too mild to really be called horseradish

If you're looking for something to accompany your roast beef one Sunday lunchtime, and are afraid of being bitten by a bit of spice, then this product is probably just what you are looking for. It's a very mild horseradish, slightly peppery as a horseradish sauce should be, but offers no more than that.

The consistency is quite sloppy. However, the jar is a good size and usually at my local supermarket these are on a "3 for £2" offer, alongside Mint Sauce, Seafood sauce etc. It doesn't have an unpleasant taste at all. It would just be quite easy to think there was no real horseradish in it at all. Colman's make a great range of mustards so it is really disappointing to write a review that isn't very favourable, but there you go.

In short, it is a sauce youcan serve up to everyone without being worried it's too hot for them. If you want a real horseradish bite though, you're probably better off going for a horseradish paste than a sauce. Personally though I like to feel the tingle of horseradish in my nose and this doesn't do that!
