A disappointing sauce from Discovery, won't be buying it again

I had a rack of ribs in the freezer and was on the look out for a sauce to go with them, wanted something a bit more exciting than the usual BBQ sauce, something with a bit of a kick. and spotted this bottle of Discovery Chicago Sticky Ribs sauce. It cost £1.99 from my local Co-op, a bit more than I would normally pay for something like this but thought I would give it a try as a treat.

It comes in a 200ml clear bottle (not a jar as picture) with an orange label and black lid. The labels claims ''Chicago Sticky Rib sauce. A Versatile honey and smoky chilli sauce for making sticky sausages, traditional Chicago ribs or just use as a ketchup'.

I boiled the ribs first and cooled then brushed the sauce on allover the ribs and let it marinate for about an hour, before pouring over more of the sauce and placed under the grill for about 15 - 20 minutes.
They looked great, the sauce had a lovely, shiny, glazed look and smelt gorgeous.

However, both my other half and I felt let down by the taste. I couldn't taste any chilli, or any of the other spices and herbs it claimed to contain, to be honest it was very bland, and really quite sickly. To me it tasted of tomato ketchup with some honey mixed it. Far too sweet, and left an unpleasant after taste. Quite disappointing really. I won't be buying this again, especially at around £2.00 a bottle. I wouldn't even try it as a dipping sauce as suggested on the label due to the nasty after taste.

        Read away!

I am always pottering around the sauce isle is the supermarket, looking for new bits and bobs to replenish my larder. I was drawn to this Sticky rib sauce for 2 reasons, firstly I had just that week made fajitas with the discovery brand seasoning powder and it was lovely, and secondly, it was buy 2 for £1.80 in Tesco.

It comes in a glass bottle, with a screw top, much like ketchup and 325g.

The bottle states, 'Chicago Sticky Rib sauce. A Versatile honey and smoky chilli sauce for making sticky sausages, traditional Chicago ribs or just use as a ketchup'
I was drawn to the sticky sausages, and I knew I had some posh sausages in the freezer, and the kids love sausage and mash!

Opening the jar, the sause has a fairly thick consistency, the main smell you get is a smokey paprika aroma. Good start! It is a grainy sauce, you can see spices running through it, not a claggy gooey mass like many other shop bought products. I tasted it, it was good, again, smokey paprika is the first hit, then a bit of heat, not very strong, just a nice amount, so fine for the kids. Then, finishing off with a sweet tingly finish...honey, didn't taste the garlic, but I can be fairly heavy handed with garlic so probably laden with it for most!

I decided to go with the sausage option. I popped 8 fat sausages in a roaster, covered with about half the sauce, found that it didn't cover terribly well, so I added a couple of tablespoons of honey to enhance the sticky sausage dinner that I was after. Cooked for about 30 mins in a fan oven at 170, gave a stir and popped in for another 10 mins. The result was a perfectly cooked family meal, all the sausages had been well covered, and the sauce was a rich dark glossy brown colour. Served with buttery mash and green beans. Was wonderful. We scoffed the lot, and have bought more!

        1/4 of a jar contains
        164cals
        6.1g sugar
        3.8g fat
        0.4g saturates
        0.8g salt.

Not the healthyest at all, but a simple delicious family meal. Would recommend this product 100%. Only to cook with, not as a ketchup as it states in the bottle as a little to harsh cold I think.
