Advantages: It comes in a jar?
Disadvantages: Expensive tomato sauce in a jar. Mutton dressed as lamb.
In my opinion Dolmio sauces are such a waste of money, and this fact was reinforced to me, when my better half purchased a jar of this and then proceeded to cook it, and fed me it almost unknowingly. I didn't even realize it was a (semi) instant sauce, other than noticing it was too sweet.
When you consider that the basic Italian pasta sauce (which Dolmio is) is just created by cooking out finely diced onion, some crushed garlic until its all soft (but not burnt), and a Passata mixed with a few dried herbs. (Passata is just sieved tomatoes, minus skin an seeds) it becomes apparant what a waste of cash it is.
So where am I going with this?
Well the point is, when a basic Italian sauce is so cheap and simple to make, and can be made more exciting just as easily by adding a few more ingredients of your choice, why would I (or anyone else for that matter) want to spend more on a ready made sauce.
Its not a mute point, Morrisons bettabuy Passata sauce is 32 pence, the equivalent quantity of Dolmio sauce is around 3 to 4 times that amount. Even when you add the cost of cooking it, and a few herbs, its still more than half the price.
So I guess it must taste supremely better? Well no actually it doesn't, the taste is not hugely different. I mean how different can you make tomatoes and a few herbs taste. Its not Masterchef to knock up a quick sauce.
The only noticeable difference was that Dolmio was much sweeter, and had larger chunks of onions in. (and no doubt a longer list of unecsseary ingredients). So ok, you don't have the time in the evenings, well cook a large batch of sauce, and keep it in the fridge for a few days, or freeze its the same thing and used the same way.
So in summary, save your money, and set your culinary skills loose on the humble tomato sauce, and rest assured it is probably the easiest Italian meal to cook. Enjoy!
Summary: The most expensive way to purchase a tomato.
