Advantages: Something to suit all households
Disadvantages: Can get organic sauces for the same price
I'm very low on food at the moment, so I was limited for lunch choices and decided to throw together a quick pasta dish. Almost completely lacking in ingredients, I found a Dolmio express packet in the cupboard, which is basically just a stir-in sauce.
Dolmio sauces can be found in all the main supermarkets in various tomato-based flavours. You can buy family-sized jars, small stir-in tubs and microwave pouches. Most people make their own pasta sauce from scratch, however I only do this when I have time and ingredients! Also, as I'm only cooking for myself the single portions of sauce are much easier and quicker, not to mention less wasteful. This is a big plus point for me with Dolmio because many companies either aim for the individual or the family, and don't cater for both. But Dolmio sauces cover all bases.
The flavour I had this lunchtime was 'Sun-ripened Tomato and Basil' and is very simply made with few ingredients. 170g cost under £1, and that was from the Co-op so you could probably find it cheaper elsewhere. All I had to do was cut open the top corner and stick in the microwave for 45 seconds, so I cooked my pasta and veg and then stuck the sauce in at the last moment. To be honest I should have just been more organised and had the ingredients to make my own, but it tasted lovely and rich, and this is true of all the Dolmio sauces I've tried in the past. The use by date was also next year, so it's good to keep on hand just in case.
I have to say that I don't normally buy Dolmio sauces, and this is really because I prefer to buy the supermarket's own organic sauce at around the same price, or buy Jamie Oliver's lovely sauces. Having said that, as far as I know Dolmio is the only company that does the microwavable pouches, which are definitely a selling point.
Overall, Dolmio sauces definitely aren't a food essential, but they can be good to have on hand for a quick meal.
