      Like onions but smaller

Shallots are small onions with a slightly sweeter and less tart flavour, that doesn't make very much difference when they are soaked in vinegar like these are but you can tell the difference between these and ordinary pickled onions even though they don't have the same combination of flavours as fresh shallots. There are about 20 shallots in each 300g jar but that's ok because even though they're small you don't need to eat very many to be satisfied because they have such a strong flavour.

I think the best way to eat these is to have them on your plate as an accompaniment to a salad or other meal involving different separate components. I have eaten them chopped up in a sandwich too and also used them one day last week in vegetable soup because I didn't know my boyfriend had used the last of the fresh onions until it was too late and I had already chopped the rest of the vegetables and added everything (except onions!!) to the pan. It was cold and wet outside and I didn't want to go out so I took two shallots out of the jar and rinsed them under cold water to remove as much of the vinegar as possible, I then treated them like any other onion by chopping them up and adding them to the saucepan with the rest of the ingredients.

The Garner's Shallots are delicious with a nice crunch and a very strong flavour. They aren't as crunchy as some pickled onions because I think shallots are naturally a bit softer than onions but they are extremely satisfying to eat because you can feel and hear them crunching between your teeth.

The only thing that spoils these pickled shallots for me is the way the thin end keeps so much vinegar, I've got into the habit of squeezing each shallot gently when I take them out of the jar to make sure all of the liquid vinegar goes back into the jar instead of leaking out onto my plate as I'm eating. The vinegar is very sharp but it has a spicy flavour too that is addictive, my mum doesn't like these shallots more (she prefers other brands of pickled onion that aren't so strong) but when I bought her a jar recently she said she couldn't leave them alone and had to keep going back into the kitchen to have another one!!

      Superior to pickled onions!

I absolutely love pickled onions and things like that so I was really happy to stumble upon a jar of these late one night in my mothers kitchen cupboard and I have to admit that I even dream about these! If you like pickled shallots then these are quite simply a must buy its that simple!

They come in a glass see-through jar with a plain silver coloured lid and on the front label which is white in colour we are clearly told what they and who they are by and that they are 'Specially selected ingredients, hand picked for quality' then on the back of the jar other information given includes being told a bit about the product, that they weigh 300g (other sized jars are available by the way), the ingredients are stated and contact details for the manufacturer are given. Its a nice jar this one and informative enough too.

      The Shallots:

What you get is lots of shallots, some in halves (depending on the size I guess) and some whole shallots in a very dark and plain looking vinegar and like I have already said I love these and find them so addictive!

All of the shallots I have eaten out of this jar are fresh and crunchy even though the jar had been opened prior to me finding them and over the days it took me to consume them they stayed really fresh tasting and of course a shallot tastes a bit like a superior picked onion!

The vinegar is really tangy and good quality and really well seasoned and so the shallots do taste a little salty which is absolutely great against the tangy vinegar flavour they all have and the vinegar includes spices though I can't depict what those are meant to be to be entirely honest with you but I do think there is a little hotness to these, again which I appreciate.

These are fantastic and the best pickled shallots I have ever tasted and I totally give them the thumbs up!

Available from all good supermarkets and so on, my Mum got the ones I ate from Tescos costing £2.46 and I think I will be needing to replace them asap before she notices!

I have always bought these adorable tasty shallots, but the last 4 jars have been disappointing as they have been soft and mushy!! Their web address is "dropped" or in the process of being dropped...how do I contact them to let them what has happened? I will give a high rating to these shallots as they are normally very yummy indeed!! This is possibly just a bad batch, but I can't contact them!!

If you like pickled onions, you will love these. Garners Pickled Shallots taste absolutely fantastic. They really are better than ANY other pickled onion - hands down, no contest! Unfortunately they are only available around Christmas time, so stock up when you can get hold of them. You will not be sorry.
