Advantages: Taste, filling, easy to prepare when I'm at work
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest brand, but worth the extra few pennies
When it comes to tinned soups I have yet to come across a brand that is as tasty as Heinz. Pretty much everyone has come across these tins of soup at some point, and vegetable soup is one of their most common flavours. There are other varieties of the classic vegetable soup out there - winter vegetable, and spring vegetable - and although these are also yummy, you can't beat an old classic!
Soup for me is a comfort food as well as being a reasonably healthy meal. A nice hot steaming bowl of soup on a freezing cold day, especially when partnered with a piece of fresh crusty bread - heavenly. What with us just having a pretty cold winter I got through several tins of soup for my lunches in the winter months.
Heinz tins are instantly recognisable on the supermarket shelves. With their classic red label and green logo, the words 'classic vegetable soup' and a picture of a steaming bowl of yummy looking soup on the front. There is also a little green 'box' stating that this soup also counts as 1 of your 5 a day. The tin also clearly states that there are no artificial colours or preservatives used in the soup. All sounds good so far.
I'm not one for listing ingredients, but in a tin of vegetable soup you may be interested in what vegetables are present. There is quite a variety in this tin - tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peas, onion and swede. There is also some pasta in the soup. The combination of these vegetables makes a very yummy soup indeed. The liquid base of the soup definitely has a tomato-ness to it whereas all the other vegetables are identifiable in the soup.
As well as being a yummy combination of flavours, this soup is very easy to prepare. You can cook it on the hob or in the microwave. I tend to have these for my lunch when I'm in work, so with no hob, but access to a microwave, this tends to be how I heat this soup up. When heated in the microwave you simply transfer the contents of the tin into a microwaveable dish, and cover (I recommend you DO cover the soup whilst heating or you end up with a messy microwave!) Heat on full power for two minutes, give the soup a stir, and heat again for another minute. It's as simple as that. Quick and easy (so doesn't eat too much into my break, always a plus point). The other option of heating this soup in on the hob - simply pour contents into a pan and heat, without boiling. If you boil the soup it may lead to some of the flavours being lost.
Another plus point with these Heinz tins is that they have a ring pull lid. This is a definite plus point for me as I do have these in work, where although we have a microwave we don't seem to have a tin opener. With a ring pull lid that's one less thing to worry about. The tin is also recyclable. We do have recyclable points in work so my tins all find their way in there.
These Heinz tins of soup retail about 60-70p in most supermarkets. Quite often though there are offers on where you can get a selection of 5 tins for £2. I always tend to get a mixture of 5 tins when this offer is on.
Summary: Great for when I want something warm for lunch
