Since the cold weather descended upon us I have been stocking up on canned soups for a quick and easy way of warming myself plus filling my tummy in a reasonably healthy way. I used to prepare soups from scratch but now that I live on my own I have tended to buy more in the way of convenience foods having no need to cook in bulk.
I was tempted by Tesco's recent offer of 3-for-2 but normally a single can would be 89p for 400g which I find gives me 2 quite generous portions. The can is slightly different from the one featured in the picture as it has '1 of your 5 a day' in green lettering on the left hand side of the front label. It has a handy ring pull opener which is good and overall looks quite tempting.
I am informed that the soup contains no artificial flavourings and is a 'new recipe' and that the soup is 'a thick ,hearty blend of peas and succulent ham combined to make a delicious soup... a family favourite' and is made with 'reformed ham'.
The full list of ingredients is provided on the reverse of the label plus heating instructions, contact details, storage information and nutritional information. I won't list all of this information but just let you know that half a can contains only 124 calories, 2g fat and2.2g of fibre which is pretty good if, like me, you are following a low calorie diet. It may not be suitable for everyone though because it contains gluten, wheat, barley and milk.
To be honest I was quite impressed with the thick consistency but disappointed with the taste - it just seemed to taste like any old flavour and had I been given it to taste 'blind' I could not have told you that there was much of the 'ham' taste. To me it seemed artificial to a degree and nothing at all like the home made variety.
I got a little bored with it halfway through consuming a bowl and I would not buy it again. There were tiny bits of ham in the soup and a fair number of peas but, even after adding black pepper, I found this soup to be rather tasteless and disappointing. The colour is OK and it was certainly filling but I ended up deciding I would not bother buying more of this flavour because it is just too bland for my taste.
