Advantages: Tastes great. Is filling.
Disadvantages: Can be more expensive than other brands.
I am a vegetarian and this Heinz Lentil Soup is my favourite in their 'Classic' range of soups. I often find this hard to come by in my local supermarket in the summer months, possibly because it is considered to be a 'winter warmer' kind of soup. Availability wise though, the 400g sized tin (priced at around 60p) is sold by most supermarkets.
The red label on the tin is branded with the gold Heinz logo and there is a picture of the soup on the front of the tin which is an accurate depiction of the way it looks. The soup is described as being a "thick, hearty blend of red lentils, carrots and potatoes". Other information on the label includes ingredients, cooking instructions, nutritional information and brand contact information. The tin has an easy peel lid.
I find that the soup is often quite runny at the top of the tin but has formed into a gooey lump at the base so when I tip it out into a pan it needs a good, stiff stir until the consistency is evened out. The soup is thick and gloopy and light brown in colour (turns darker after heating). There are large potato chunks (less than 1cm in size though), as well as smaller carrot lumps, shredded soft onion and green herb fragments. The lentils are pulped down and there are no features of them remaining.
The soup should not be boiled rigorously as this will impair the flavour so should be stirred frequently to avoid over-heating. I do find that the soup tends to go thinner and darker after it is heated.
The taste of the soup is rich and succulent with a spicy edge to it. I enjoy the many different textures and particularly like to get a get the bigger chunks of potato on my spoon. There is a fair amount of vegetable pieces so with every other bite you experience these textures. The soup is not too powerful in terms of spicy flavour but has a mild kick to it!
Ingredients include: Lentils (22%) Carrots, Potatoes, tomato puree, cornflour, onions, wheat flour, pea fibre, spice extracts, herb extracts, yeast extract, flavourings.
Half a can of the soup (one serving) provides 83 kcals and 0.3 g of fat, so this is a low fat soup.
It is branded as suitable for vegetarians and has no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It also contains wheat, gluten, barley and celeriac.
In comparison with other brands of soup in the same flavour I would say this is the best tasting soup. It is also one of the best in the vegetarian range. It is a great, filling soup which I think a lot of kids would like as it doesn't contain any chewy bits or textures that they might dislike.
Summary: A delicious lentil soup from Heinz.
