      the best mayo

I love mayonnaise, especially on a salad - but it is just so fattening that it literally defeats the point of me eating a nice healthy salad in the first place. That was until I discovered Hellmanns extra light mayonnaise, or 'lighter than light' as it is sometimes called.

Id been using Hellmanns light mayonnaise for years, but after comparing the calories in the light and the normal mayonnaise I found that there was barely any difference! One day in the supermarket I noticed the extra light version on the shelf, and it was on offer so I decided to give it a try. I was a bit dubious as first, expecting it to be really thin and runny, or taste funny and just not be as nice as normal mayonnaise, but I was very suprised! This stuff actually tastes just as good, if not better, than normal mayonnaise - if anything its just not as sickly as normal mayonnaise. Its just as thick and just as tasty, and the best part is - there is only 11 calories per TABLESPOON! Yep you read it right - per tablespoon - which is quite alot of sauce for next to no calories.

My flatmate was adament that extra light mayonnaise was disgusting and didnt taste anything like real mayo until I put her a dollop of the extra light stuff on her plate and told her it was the normal one, and she didnt notice the difference until she'd finished eating and I'd told her what I'd done, and now she has the extra light one too.

I definitely recommend this to any mayo lover who is counting the calories and watching the pounds - it tastes just as good, and is just as thick as the regular mayo but contains 85% less fat - perfect!

Mayo that wont make Your Butt jiggle

I see that i am not the only one who stumbled upon this mayo by accident!

so i ran out of mayo and went to the shop to buy some more to go with our dinner , usually i buy light mayo by hellmanns... but once i got to the section with all the condiments i paused and saw before me ''Hellmann's Extra light Mayonnaise'' :O ... i picked it up and looked at the back to check the calories ... 11 calories *shock* i pick up the other light mayo and it says 45 calories...by now i am thinking ''what if i get the extra light mayo and my husband tells me it taste like cardboard?...then this will become wasted money...
but my husband is on a diet anyway...so if he complains then oh well, but if he likes it then another safe item we can add to the list to enjoy''

so i decide to give ''Hellmann's Extra light'' a go. i rush home and i dont tell my husband i bought extra light..as i will put it on his sandwich with out him knowing about it first...i will get his opinion before i tell him i switched mayo's whahahaha! because as we all know people tend to complain when things are ''extra light '' or ''extra less''.

i asked him once he started eating ''so how is it'' he says '' it's really good thanks'' i say '' i switched to extra light mayo only 11 calories!'' he was like '' What!'' he grabbed the bottle and looked ..

to make my story short he loves it! :D
he says it taste like they put horse radish or mustard seeds in it , as the taste does not taste the same as the light version...and i agree with this, it does taste as if they added some kind of flavoring to it .. but this mayo is still really nice and creamy and i really do like this much better then just the ''light version''

i paid 1.32 for the jar and i really recommend you try it at least once !

Stop putting lard on your salads, and try this stuff. It won't kill you. Literally.

I can't believe some of the rubbish reviews on here. This is the extra light version - less than 3% fat, ie under 3g of fat per 100g.
Standard mayo is I think, around 80% fat, I could be wrong, but it's certainly over 50 % fat - which would be over 50g per 100g.
I mean, this product is incredible. I don't care if it tastes a bit different to Real Mayonnaise, frankly I willl never put Helman's Real Mayonaise in my body - a block of lard on my salad would probably be healthier than Hellman's Real Mayonnaise.
Some of the reviews talk about runniness, or poor consistency - I must be onto my 10th jar by now, and have never had any problems. I don't think most of the reviews on here understand just how low fat this product is compared to the Real version. There certainly seems to be some misplaced "Foodie snobbery" over what is a great tasting product in it's own right.

      A Yummy Yet Light Mayo.

A few days ago we ran out of proper Hellmans mayonaise and my mom sent me up the shop to buy some more but I cant have been paying that much attention in the shop because I came back with this Extra Light version. After my mom and everyone moaning for ages "it doesnt taste like proper mayo!" they decided to try it out anyway as I was cooking a tuna pasta and it can be a bit dry if you dont put some kind of sauce in with it. To be honest I was a little bit annoyed that Id picked up the wrong bottle because I am not usually a fan of the low fat mayo - I wish it would taste as nice as the full fat one but it simply doesnt which is a shame considering it has less calories but I dodnt have anything else so I just tried this one out.

This mayo actually has 88% less calories than proper full fat Hellmans mayo but in my experience that usually means they have comprised on taste. It has also only got 3% fat so this is actually quite good for you when you compare it to other sauces of this kind and by this brand. This is quite widely available and it will cost you around £2 for a 430ml squeezy bottle. Thats quite good value for money to be honest because one bottle should last you quite a while, I dont think anyone eats it everyday.

And then came the taste test. The question is will this taste anything like full fat mayo and will it taste as nice? And the answer to that question is sort of. This has the exact same consistency and colour as proper mayo so just by looking at it you wouldnt be able to tell the difference but as soon as you start to smell it I think you would notice the slight differences. This one smells a lot more eggy - if thats even a word and I reckon if you use to much of this on your dinner then the smell would be to overwhelming so theres some advice for you! Also the vinegar taste is a lot stronger in this probably so they didnt need to use as much oil - this being low fat and everything so again to much of this I think would be too much for your nose and you mouth! Or maybe I was just looking for problems and being picky as I think if you gave someone this instead of proper mayo and didnt tell them they wouldnt be able to tell - unless their tastebuds are really strong anyway. This went down well with everyone actually and I definately would buy it again but it is never going to taste as great as the full fat version.

I recommend for if your on a diet and even if your not but I think the normal Hellmans is still the original and the best - even if it is terrible for you. Its a decent stand-in though and try out the blind taste test on someone you know! Recommended.

      Thanks For Reading

        A great low fat Mayo!

Hellmann's only 3% fat Extra Light Mayo!

After looking at the other reviews it seems apparent that not much is thought of this product. I have to say that I totally disagree.

As we all know Mayo is not the healthiest product and for us on a diet, most try to avoid at all costs.

With Hellmann's Extra Light I feel Mayo can now be incorporated into my diet! Yippee. At only 12 calories per Tablespoon its probably just as healthy as any other sandwich or salad condiment.

Hellmann's claim that this Mayo has almost 80% less calories than their traditional Mayo, meaning that the full fat version is definitely calorific!!. Some other useful facts show that it contains per 100g 0.6g of protein, 3.0g of fat, 0.6g of Fibre, 1.1g of sodium and 2.8g of Salt.

Hellmann's also advertise they that use Free Range Eggs, always nice to know. I find the taste of Mayo quite similar to the traditional - perhaps not as strong. To be honest i don't use heaps of Mayo anyway, generally a thin layer on a BLT or something similar so for me I could not really taste a huge difference. I am just pleased that for only 12 calories I have have my deadliest sin!

For a 400g glass jar I paid around £1.70 from my local supermarket. Great Value in my opinion!

Give is a go dieters! :)

This mayonnaise tastes nothing like real mayonnaise, would not recommend

I love normal full fat mayonnaise but as i am trying to watch my weight i thought this extra light mayonnaise would spare me a few calories but after trying it i wish i hadn't bothered.

First it looked pretty similar to normal helmans mayonnaise: thick and creamy but a bit more gooey, but the taste is completely different. I tried it with tuna for a jacket potato filling and found that although it was not as nice as normal mayonnaise it was ok and you only needed a little bit of it. However i then tried it in a ham sandwich and it completely ruined it, the taste of the mayonnaise was quite strong and overpowering and was not nice at all, i could not even taste the ham. It tastes quite chemically, not something you want to be eating.

I would never buy this mayonnaise again and do not recommend, even if your on a diet stick with normal mayonnaise and just have a little bit.

Disgusting Mayo With Less Calories Than The Really Nice One!!!

I love Hellmanns Light mayo so thought I'd try this Extra Light one because there are shedloads less calories in it and even though I'm not actually on a diet I'm trying to cut down on the amount of fat I'm eating.

I know loads of people don't like this mayo and...... they're right, it's not just crap it tastes horrible!!!

When I got a spoon out to mix in with my tuna it looked a bit stickier than Hellmanns Light but has got a nice thick texture, I thought it was going to be thin with it being Extra Light but there isn't much difference between them.

I tried a bit on it's own and it tasted disgusting. It doesn't taste creamy at all and you can taste the vinegar in it big time, I didn't like the chemical taste of it either and the way you can taste the chemicals for ages after the mayo has been eaten. It's got a bit of a sticky feel in my mouth and I wasn't mad keen on that either but to be fair that isn't majorly noticable.

I didn't use the whole tin of tuna but just made up enough tuna mayo to do my butty and I'm glad about that because it would have been a waste! I didn't even put the bit I DID make up onto the bread because I knew I wasn't going to eat it. The mayo spoilt the tuna because I couldn't hardly taste the tuna over it and the vinegar taste came through proper strong. One good thing is that while it was mixed with the tuna you couldn't taste the chemicals that much, but that's still no good because I still knew it was there and the taste comes through a bit stronger in the after taste.

I don't know why anyone would eat this because it's disgusting, if you're on a diet Hellmanns Light is low in calories anyway so there's no point swapping to this horrible mayo just to save a few more!!!

          Not Recommended!!!

An ethical low fat mayo - perfect!

Is this too good to be true? A mayonnaise which is not just light but is extra light? Well apparently not.....I am a big mayonnaise fan and use it regularly as it helps me to eat things which I don't really find that tempting (salad perhaps!)

This mayonnaise promises that it is only 3% fat, 12 calories per tablespoon and apparently has just the same amount of taste despite having 88% less calories than the normal mayonnaise. Unlike many low fat products this one isn't full of loads of sugar to make it taste better.

This mayonnaise does taste slighty more vinegary than the normal full fat product but this is barely noticeable when eating it with something (as opposed to spoonfuls on their own!) If I was to do a blind taste test then I really don't think that I wouldn't notice the difference at all.

So, unless you have extremely sensitive taste buds I would really recommend this!

Another plus about this product is that it uses free range eggs - to be honest I wouldn't buy any product that didn't use free range eggs (as far as possible) so it is really good to see that a leading brand is taking animal welfare so seriously.

Althougth it is not a favourite if mine i would recommed it to those who want a lighter way to enjoy

I have always used the normal or regular mayonnaise.
But when this hit the shops i thought i would give it a go and i was rather disappointed with the product, it just tasted rather oily , Ive always relied on hellmans mayonaise to create the perfect sandwhich or egg mtonaise even potato salad but this just seemed to lack the usual taste i am used to.
Anyway about this product , it comes in various packaging, of the squeezy bottle of the jar (personally like the squeezy bottle) they have various forms and you can identify them by the lables, The hellmanns company are coming up with lots of diffrent types of mayonnaise ranging from garlic and chilli etc , but the one in question here is the light mayonnaise they have produced.
The light mayonnise is really runny and not as thick as the regular. and it tastes as i said before oily it does not seem to have any kind of mayonaaisy taste to it. Hellmans have never really disappointed me and even thought my taste buds are not liking this product , it does not mean others with have the same reaction and avoid this product, it is just that i am used to the regular one.
However i would recommed this mayonnaise to those that are looking for a lighter way to enjoy a club sandwhich.

Tip..... Asda have offers on at the moment for this mayonnaise, only charging £1 a jar ,which is good with the run up to xmas , may i just also add that the offer is on for all the ranges of the hellmans mayonnaise

              Don't do it!!!

My dad had a jar of this at his so I tried it. He is on a diet at the moment so had cut out all high fat versions of sauces, etc, and as I love mayo I thought I would give it a go :)

Hellmann's Extra Light Mayonnaise is advertised as a 'saintly mayonnaise with 3% fat' which makes it a lot less calories than the full fat version...

The product comes in a 400g glass bottle (recycle please!) and had a best before date of June next year and my dad says it was about £1,70 which seemed a lot to me but it is a famous brand I guess.

On the front of the label there is a part that says only 12 calories per tablespoon which is awesome!

Hellmann's says it taste creamy and light, and there are free range eggs and yolks in the ingredients.

In the tablespoon there are 0.8g of sugar and 0.5g of fat and 0, 4 g of salt too.

When I used the mayonnaise on my sandwich it looked really good when I opened the jar, a light cream colour and really, really thick and sticky on my knife. But the smell was horrible.
You could really smell the bitterness of the vinegar and it didn't smell natural at all :(

When I taste the sauce it was nasty, really artificial rather than natural and it was sour with the horrible smell lingering there, Yuk. It wasn't nice or creamy or pleasant at all and I feel sorry for people on a diet that have to eat that stuff!

I had to throw my food away and start again! I don't know how my dad can eat that stuff and I won't again and I don't even want to give it any stars - it doesn't deserve it!

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

Good if you are tring to watch your weight.

I think many of us struggle to maintain our weight, I prefer not to diet strictly but if I feel that my weight is starting to creep up then I instinctively know then that is the time to cut back on the `goodies` and nip it in the bud before the bathroom scales start to groan.
Maybe I am one of the lucky ones but once I set my mind on losing a few pounds then I find that I actually enjoy the change of diet.
I have a good breakfast, usually porridge and fruit followed by a lunch of low fat cheese, fruit and yoghurt and then later on I will enjoy a huge plate of mixed salad with some added protein. If I stick to this plan for a couple of weeks then that extra weight soon slides off.

I love salad but it has to be varied, if you make your daily diet boring and overly repetitive then you are far less likely to stick to it. I enjoy all kinds of salad, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, shredded carrot, onion, beetroot there is nothing much that I do not like except for radish!
But one thing that I find difficult to digest is salad that lacks any dressing or mayonnaise, it seems like you are wading your way through a plateful of dry and very unappetising straw.

I have always loved the thick creamy Bellman's mayonnaise and I saw no reason to change anything very much just because I was weight watching. Hellman's offer a very acceptable extra light version of their famous mayo.
I bought a squeezy bottle of Hellman's extra light mayonnaise mainly because I can sit it in the fridge without worrying that a glass jar is going to get knocked over and smash to smithereens on the kitchen floor.

Sainsbury's have the Hellman's extra light squeezy bottle of mayonnaise on offer at £2.10 for 430 ml.
The plastic flip top bottle can be easily wiped over with a damp cloth to ensure that it is always kept clean. Like any product that contains raw egg the mayonnaise must be stored in the fridge once it has been opened. The bottle will keep for up to a month.

Hellman's extra light mayonnaise contains less than 3% fat and one tablespoon full contains just 12 calories. So that large plate of salad can be comfortably covered with a good and fairly creamy extra light mayonnaise without too much guilt kicking in.
I like to layer my salad and put the mayonnaise in between so that it is as evenly distributed as possible, this makes sure that the salad is tempting rather than punishing.
The extra light mayonnaise may not be quite as rich and creamy as the full fat version but if you take into account that it contains 88% less calories then I am sure that you will agree that it is worth trying. The extra light mayo has a good thick consistency and it still has plenty of taste.
The mayonnaise is suitable for vegetarians too.

Look at it this way, I will not be weight watching forever ( hopefully!) if I can shed my few extra pounds without too many tears of frustration then I can usually manage to maintain it fairly well.

Hellman's produce a wide and very varied range of mayonnaise and salad dressing which include an ordinary light version of the Hellman's mayo, a Dijon mayonnaise, a garlic mayonnaise ( such a shame you can't get a light version of this ) , vinaigrette, 1000 island dressing, French dressing and Caesar salad dressing.

I love those ready made salad pots that you can buy in the supermarkets but they work out at nearly £2 each, hence I hoof off and buy a bag full of salad and a bottle of Hellman's mayonnaise and make my own version.

                  Disadvantages

                  Dont buy it. Trust me.

Hellmann's Extra Light Mayonnaise is SUPPOSEDLY the healthier alternative. But I have a theory which will disprove the sneaky marketing campaign that claims to save your waistline whilst allowing you to enjoy the deliciousness that is Hellmanns.

                  Let's look at the facts:

This version of the deliciousness known as Hellmann's mayonnaise contains half the fat (only 3%) of the original Hellmanns. It also contains only half the calories. But what they DON'T tell you is that is that they have excluded one of the VITAL ingredients. The delicious taste. That's right- where's the taste?

This version is thin and there's SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT! Read other reviews on here and was shocked- true mayo lovers do not be fooled by what they say, it isn't true! Hellmann's Extra Light is not as tasty and delicious as the original.

The consistency of it is poorer, the colour is more transparent and it has a weird sweetness that is sickening. The fact that free range hens laid the eggs that went into making this, is poor consolation. I'm sure the hens would have hated to know that they were allowed to roam free and have a nice life, laid a few eggs- and the eggs were used in something so gross. I tried this stuff from two jars just to be sure it wasn't one bad batch. It wasn't.

I love mayonnaise and I put on sandwiches and eat it with chips...jacket potatoes and roast chicken...or fried chicken...*drools* oh yeah, that's the stuff! But how can I enjoy those things when they are covered in THIS? I tried the Light with all of the above and nothing tasted as good.

Aside from the horrible texture and weird sweetness its nothing like mayonnaise ought to be.

They SAY it will save your waistline - and I thought I would save my waistline by trying a lighter version - after having a jar of this I always resort to DOUBLE the amount of normal mayonnaise just to remove the awful taste of the light!

A 400g jar cost me £1.80 - well, there's £1.80 I'll never see again. The original may be calorie-laden, sure, but at least its WORTH the calories.

If you don't believe me- and let's face it, why would you, I sound like a crazy person, then you can buy this from most supermarkets.

                    Advantages

                    Disadvantages

Half the fat means I can eat twice as much, oh thats not the idea.....doh!!

I have to admit I'm a sucker for a Tuna and Mayonnaise Sandwich or baguette or roll or anything with tuna and mayonnaise in it, my other big vice is chips with Mayonnaise, I like to pretend its because I'm such a cultured Europhile, enjoying the Belgian style of eating, when in fact its just that I'm greedy!

So with this obsession with Mayonnaise, I've had to try the Extra Light to at least pretend I care about my weight and health when stuffing my face. This is basically your normal mayonnaise but with less fat. The packaging is the same with a jar filled with lovely white creamy mayonnaise but with a blueish label telling you how great you are for being so healthy in your choices.

The Mayonnaise does lack a bit of the texture of the original in that it isn't as thick, it claims to be half the fat and half the calories, which is great as it means I'll eat twice as much, when I mixed it with Tomato Sauce and Prawns it made a lovely sauce so it still does all the basics really well.

Flavour wise it still has that in oodles, it is rich, has the merest hint of the egg, which apparently is of the free range variety, it is slightly sweeter than the original for my taste but when chips are dipped it still picks up a mighty dollop and tastes wonderfully rich.

You can buy this in 400g or 600g jars, right now there is a 2 for £2 offer on the 400g jars at Tescos which is well worth a look, otherwise they are £1.79 for a jar of this size.

                      Disadvantages

Salad cream spread for the calorie conscious

Being blessed with a slim waistline and smooth firm bottom I've never been one for being obsessed with counting the calories. The reason I sampled this Hellmann's Extra Light mayonnaise was because I was invited round to dinner by a fat bottomed friend and I was offered this as a condiment to adorn some daintily prepared cucumber sandwiches. In truth I would have preferred something from the Paul Newman range of salad dressings, but I refrained from making a fuss about the matter.

Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise is a little thinner than the original and claims to possess half the fat (at only 3%), half the calories, but all the taste of the real thing and I would go along with that. Everyone to be sure needs something to add a little vigour to a dangling limp lettuce leaf or to bring a wilting cucumber back to life and spreading a bit of Hellmann's about certainly seems to do the trick.

Although not as thick when scooped from the jar, the light version seems just as rich and tasty as the original. Perhaps it is a little less creamy but it still retains a good consistency and is not watery or runny as are some cheaper varieties. The flavour is quite sweet and there is a citrus tang and one can detect only a hint of egg. According to the label I was pleased to discover that the eggs and egg yolk of Hellmans Mayonnaise Extra Light are no longer sourced from battery farm hens and are now derived from free range hens.

The salad dressing of which I partook came in the traditional glass jar. Fortunately, although I live in a socially deprived area, none of my friends or family (fat-bottomed or otherwise) have resorted to the dreadful undignified habit of squeezing their condiments from plastic bottles.

The jars are available in most supermarkets. A 400g jar will set you back about £1.79.
