I enjoy cooking and prefer to make sauces from scratch when I have the time but let's face it, most of us don't always have the time. What with busy work schedules, housework and two young children it's a wonder I have the time to rustle up beans on toast!
I've been something of a fan of Chicken Tonight for a number of years now, with the Country French variety being one of my favourites.
Chicken Tonight used to be a relatively cheap sauce to buy but recently it seems to have jumped in price to £1.51 (at all the usual retailers - courtesy of mysupermarket.com), so now I generally buy it when it is on special offer and stock up.
The sauce is sold in a 500g clear glass jar with a green screw off lid. The labels depicts chicken served in the sauce with various vegetables for decoration, the Chicken Tonight logo sits above this.
Upon opening, a slightly sour wine type smell is released although not unpleasant - this improves during the cooking process.
A dish can be cooked using the sauce on the hob or in the oven. I always use the hob so I'll briefly describe this method.
Instructions on the rear of the packet advise that 450g of cubed chicken is fried in a pan until golden, the sauce can then be stirred in and left to simmer for 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. That's it! Couldn't be any more simple.
As I like to get as many veggies into my children as possible, I always add chopped onion, carrot and mushrooms to the mix - the onion and carrots a the beginning and the mushrooms later as they don't take as long to cook.
I find this adds a little bulk to the already thick and creamy sauce, I then add a little full milk to make the sauce go that bit farther!
The sauce has a lovely creamy taste and just a hint of a traditional white wine sauce, slightly tart but complimented well by the cream. There are also visible flecks of carrots and mushrooms in the sauce - prior to adding my own that is.
Nutritionally the product per 100g provides:
Energy 95 kcal
of which sugars 2.5g
of which saturates 1.0g
Salt (based on Sodium) 0.85g
I generally serve the finished dish with pasta and find it is a meal that the whole family can enjoy - with my youngest - I tend to add just a couple of teaspoons of the sauce to pasta and mash this for him. I'm not really one for buying special baby sauces.
Unfortunately my partner can't eat this - he's vegetarian. I searched through the ingredients but could not find anything that did not appear suitable for veggies, although the V sign was missing.
After phoning Unilever customer care, I was informed that it is not suitable for veggies - something to do with the pasteurization process. I kind of lost interest after hearing the word no! the helpful lady did however email me a list of products suitable/unsuitable.
I'd recommend this sauce for those with a busy lifestyle looking for a quick and easy tasty dish. Keep your eyes open for special offers!
