Sainsbury's Basics Curry Sauce
Advantages: Cheap and not bad tasting and is a great base for a good curry
Disadvantages: Rather mild and may be too fruity for some people
I love to make myself a curry though I wouldn't know where to start from scratch so recently I've been purchasing the odd curry sauce mix/jar etx along with piece of chicken and an onion and when I saw this at 4p a jar I couldn't believe it was so cheap I had to try one out! lol.
440g roundish glass jar with a white screw on/off lid to the top of it and it has a white label that goes around it's main 'body' On the front of that all in orange and white writing I'm told it is Sainsbury's 'Basics' Curry Sauce 'Simpler selection, but the spice is right', there is a scribble of what I think is meant to be a pile of spice, there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there and I'm told that it contains less than 3% fat. Other information on the jar gives me a full nutritional run-down, ingredients and allergy advice is listed, I'm given a recipe idea and contact details for Sainsbury's are given. It's a cheap looking jar but informative enough,
Recipe Idea On The Back Of The Jar:
Cut 240g skinless, boneless chicken breasts into bit size pieces.
Heat 2x 15ml spoons of oil in a saucepan, add the chicken and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
Stir in the sauce, bring to the boil, cover than reduce the heat and simmer gently for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Me And The Sauce:
Well it's up to you you use this sauce. You can use whatever meats, vegetables or meat substitutes as you like of course though no where on this jar does it tell me its suitable for Vegetarians so I feel like I must point that out!
All you do really is as the recipe suggestion says. Fry off whatever ingredients your using and then add the sauce and let it simmer! It couldn't be simpler and even I can do it!
So the sauce it light brown in colour, not too thick but not drippy either but it does pour out of the jar with the ease. It has a sweet smell of sultanas to along with a hint of garlic and general spices and over-all it smells rather pleasant but not too rich.
Taste wise well it's ok really. It's quite mild in flavour and it is a smooth sauce. It doesn't melt to runny like water and coats ingredients very well and the longer you simmer it for the more it tends to thicken up a bit. It tastes like a curry sauce! It is rather sweet but naturally so and has a nice blend of spices to it and not too much garlic. Although the majority of the sauce is smooth it does have a few sultanas in it (not many though) which really do give this in part a light, sweet fruity taste.
It's nicely seasoned and does have a slight kick of chilli to it which goes well with the sweetness!
For me this is the base of a curry. Since buying my first jar and using it as it came I have been quite experimental and long gone are the days of simply chopping up an onion and some chicken! Now I add my own garlic, chilli's, mushrooms, fresh coriander to it all as well!
On it's own its ok but as a base sauce I think this is really great! Not too oily or dried, its well blended and if your not overly keen on things about it you can correct it! So as an example if it's a bit too sweet add more chilli to counteract that with and things like that. I think this is really work a try and it's really economical too!
