It's always a great idea to try and save money in your weekly shop, but buying a jar of sauce for as little as 9p when the premium brands charge between £1 and £2, could be seen as a little extreme. With ingredients as appetising as water, tomato puree and onion, you'd be forgiven for feeling a bit sceptical about this sauce.
But fear not. It has taste and it has spice. I related it to a tikka masala sauce as it's certainly like a spicy tomato sauce. I'm used to tikka masalas and kormas, and it's spicier than those, but it's not overly spicy, even for me. It's about right. The first time I tried the sauce I made about a third of the jar and poured it over some chips. It give the chips an extra flavour, a pleasant one I might add, and was probably little different to buying curry sauce from your local chippy for 80p. Only this portion has cost me just three little pennies. The second time I used the rest of the jar up (300g of Sainsbury's basics goodness, nice!) with some vegetables that needed eating up, and a small portion of rice. It was a very cheap meal, but it was actually rather tasty, and I preferred it as a curry rather than as a sauce. If that makes sense.
It's low calorie (164 in half a jar), and very low in saturated fat (0.2g in half a jar), so unlike other sauces that have half of your daily allowance in half of their jars, you don't feel guilty about eating it, and you won't put on the pounds.
It doesn't look very appetising in its standard white and orange packaging, and it doesn't look particularly nice when it's cooking, or even when it's cooked. But it's not about presentation for us everyday people, it's about taste, convenience and price. It tastes nice. It's very easy to cook. And, at 9p, it's hardly a bank breaker.
Summary: A very low cost alternative that offers a surprisingly good result
