Tesco Tomato & Basil Soup
Advantages: Delish; Majorly filling
Disadvantages: Not as chunky as New Covent Garden soup
I love New Covent Garden soups but they're majorly expensive so when I saw that Tesco do their own version I thought I'd give the Tomato And Basil one a go, it was on special offer and was only about 70p for a 500ml carton so I knew I wouldn't be losing a load of cash if the soup wasn't as good as I thought it would be.
They come in a carton and are easy to open because you only have to pull the sides away and then the top opens easy. You can either nuke the soup while it's still in the carton or pour it into a saucepan and cook it on the top, I'm dead lazy so did mine in the microwave and it took about 3 mins.
When you pour it into your dish you'll see that even though there are shedloads of chunks of tomato there still aren't as many as in New Covent Garden, it doesn't look thin or anything but I'm used to zillions of chunks of tomato in this sort of soup so I felt a bit let down by it! lol It's a gorgeous bright red colour though and looks proper appetising, you can see little bits of basil in the soup and the smell when it's first cooked is of yummy fresh tomatoes and there is a nice herby smell as well which is the basil plus a bit of a mix of other herbs.
It's proper filling though, even though there aren't that many chunks of tomato in it the soup itself is still majorly thick so even having just half the carton fills you up like you've made a full meal and not just a bowl of soup.
The taste is big time fresh tomatoes, you can tell even without looking at the ingredients that there are shedloads of proper nice fresh tomatoes in there. Under the tomato taste it's quite strong of basil and I love that herb so it suits me wicked, people who don't like basil all that much might think it's a bit TOO strong though and it deffo has got a bit of a stronger herb taste than the New Covent Garden one. I think it tastes proper home made and the flavours are deffo there even though there aren't as many chunks as I'm used to having in this sort of soup.
You can freeze this soup in the garden and that's great when it's on special offer because it means you can save a few quid by stocking up and freezing them, you have to eat it within a month from when you froze it but that's fine because it's so yummy you won't want to be leaving it in the freezer for long! lol
Recommended... even when it's back to full price I deffo recommend this soup because it's cheaper than New Covent Garden and has got a lush and mega filling taste! Yummy!!!
