I have recently tried out the Tesco value jar of pasta sauce and this is my review.
I have been trying out some of the items in the Tesco value range to see if I can save a few pence on my weekly shop and I have found that some of them are very good value but other items in the range are not that good and I will not get them again.
The packaging is very plain but this is cos it is a Tesco value item and all of the items in the Tesco value range are basic products and you are paying only for the products and not for any fancy packaging. This does not bother me to much cos I am more concerned with the item and not what packet it comes in as this goes in the bin anyway.
The jar is made of glass and so it can be recycled once it has been given a wash out. The jar is 440ml in size and this cost me under 40 pence which I think is a very affordable and good price. I made the pasta sauce for myself and my sister one night for a meal and I thought there was enough sauce in the jar to feed the both of us enough and I didn't think the portion of sauce was on the stingy side.
The pasta sauce can probably be used in a few different ways but I chose to cook my pasta first and then add the heated sauce to the cooked/soft pasta. I was pleased that the pasta suace did not take to long to heat up, only a few minutes. After I had added the pasta sauce to the cooked pasta I returned it to the heat and stirred it for another few minutes. I then added a little cooked Italian sausage to the sauce to give a little bit of bite to the meal and put a bit of parmesan cheese on top. I served the pasta and sauce with home made garlic bread.
So what did we think? Well I was glad I had added the sausage because the pasta suace is quite smooth and didn't have any wee chunks in it the way that other little suaces do so I think it might have been a bit sloppy if I hadn't done that.
The sauce had a nice tomato and herb flavour to it and I thought the colour was very nice and I could see little flecks of green herbs through it. The sauce wasn't to salty which was good for me cos most jars of sauce are a bit salty for my taste. Also I thought that the sauce had a nice texture and it was not to runny.
Also a bad side to the sauce was that there was a bit of an after taste to it which I thought was from the tomato flavour being a bit acidy or over powering. This was a bit disappointing for me but for what I paid for the sauce I was not to let down and to be honest I would buy it again as it is a handy thing to keep in my cupboard and I thought the taste was quite nice on the most part.
The sauce cost under forty pence so beggars can't be choosers and a similar sauce that I have bought a lot of times in the past costs around a pound more than this and it also has a bit of an after taste so I feel I am as well buying the cheaper Tesco value sauce than the dearer one as they are much the same.
I would suggest giving it a try out as I thought the sauce was really reasonable and I thought it was a great price for a good product.
