I think I may have been conned - let me explain.

When I was last shopping in Tesco's I needed some tartare sauce and decided to try Tesco Value Tartare Sauce. It never occurred to me to check the prices along the shelf as I, foolishly, thought that the value option would be the cheapest. I was quite wrong.

I have just looked at the website to check the price for this review and I found that the Tesco Value Tartare Sauce cost me 65p for 165g whereas the ordinary Tesco Tartare sauce would have cost me 61p for 180g! I appreciate that the difference here is only a matter of pennies but it does beg the question - how many other Tesco Value items are actually dearer than the standard items? I shall certainly make a point of checking in future.

Anyway despite the fact that the price wasn't the cheapest on the shelf I had bought the sauce so it needed eating and reviewing!

The tartare sauce is sold in a glass jar with a metal screw lid and the now familiar blue and red Value label showing the basic nutritional information expressed as a percentage of the adult recommended daily allowance. The back of the label gives the full nutritional information together with the ingredients and any allergy warnings.

I twisted off the top of the jar which opened with a satisfying 'pop' showing that it hadn't been tampered with before I got it and a delicious smell wafted out to my nostrils.

I was wondering how good this sauce would be as I had read a review about one of the other Tesco Value sauces which had said how thin and runny it was but I needn't have worried. This was the lovely thick creamy consistency of a good tartare sauce.

The taste was great too - I am not going to attempt to describe the taste of tartare sauce itself but suffice it to say this is definitely a good one!

Once the jar is opened you are advised to store it in the refrigerator and consume it within four weeks and obviously be the use by date on the jar.

The nutritional information for a 15g serving - one tablespoon or three teaspoons

So, despite the slight confusion over prices, the sauce itself is really nice and I would be happy to buy it again.

Of course being a glass jar it can either be reused or recycled so nothing for the landfill here!
