Tesco Value Tomato Soup
Advantages: taste good, 17p
Disadvantages: no ring pull and a little thin
Me and my partner were avid heinz fans and really didn't vary from this too much when having tomato soup however when we bought our house and moved out we decided to try different and cheaper things to see whether we can decrease our shopping bill a bit.
Having seen this on the shelf for only 17p I thought it would be worth trying compared to heinz at 65p. What did I have to loose notibng apart from 17p! I always cook my soup in the microwave so I double checked this to make sure and depending on your microwave settings it would take between 3-4 minutes. Perfect for a busy household.
It can of course also be warmed up on the home in a suace pan gently heating the soup through this would take again between 3 -4 minutes.
It says the can of 400g contains 2 portions but if like me you can eat a whole can (plus bread) you may need to get 2 which is still cheaper than 1 can of heinz soup.
The only thing is the can doesn't have a ring pull so you do need to open with a can opener and be careful as the top part of the tin falls into the can and you have to scoop it out making mess everywhere.
When opening the can you can smell the tomato-ey flours and it is quite a rich orange-red colour much like heinz. However the soup is a little thinner than leading brands and although it tastes really nice it doesn't pack as much flavour as a heinz soup. You can stored any left over soup in a container in your fridge for up to 2 days reduce the wastage.
400g a whole can or 2 portions (according to the can)
It is quite high in salt and a whole can of this would contain 36% of RDA of Salt, however the other figures show it is quite low in everything else.
I would recommend that you keep a few tins in the cupboard because they will get used and they taste really quite nice and at 17p each you can't go wrong.
Summary: Give it a go
