Tesco Vegetable Gravy Granules
Advantages: Lovely taste, quick and easy to mix up
I stopped eating meat a few years ago and thought I would try out some of the vegetable gravy granules available to see what they were like. Seeing that we do most of out shopping in Tesco I tried out there version first.
The gravy comes in the standard packaging for most gravy granules, with the metal bottom and the cardboard sides and then a plastic lid on top. This kind of packaging seems to work fine with gravy granules as I have never found it going hard or lumpy in the pack, it is always fine and grainy like it should be. The packaging is coloured green in keeping with what most companies use to show that something is for vegetarians so it is easy enough to spot on the shelves in the supermarket.
The gravy is easy enough to make up. We never eat together in our house as my Other Half works shifts and my daughter comes and goes as she feels and eats when she wants to so I usually cook all our dinners ready to go in the morning then we just hot them up later in the day when we want to eat them. This means I only have to make up enough gravy for my own dinner. The way I do it is to use a normal mug and then I place a desert spoon full off gravy granules in the bottom of the mug and pour on boiling water from the kettle to fill up the mug to half way. After a quick stir the gravy turns nice and thick, just how I like it and there is plenty to go on my dinner as I like quite a bit of gravy with my meal.
Now to what it tastes like. I find it really nice, I can't really make out any special tastes from the gravy but the flavours all blend together to make a delicious taste. The gravy looks a lot lighter than the beef gravy I buy for the others in my family but you do get used to seeing the lighter colour on your meal after a while. I much prefer the taste of the vegetable gravy to what I remember of the other kinds. My daughter eats both kinds and she prefers the vegetable gravy too, and will only eat the beef one if we have run out of everything else. My other half though will not even try the vegetable gravy, not sure whether its just not manly enough for him or whether he thinks it will go against his principals but even if we have run out of any meat gravy, he will not have the vegetable one.
Now for the ingredients, it contains the following - Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Potato Starch, Salt, Sugar, Wheat Flour, Dried Glucose Syrup, Flavouring, Dried Onion, Flavour Enhancer (Monosodium Glutamate), Colour (Ammonia Caramel), Carrot Powder, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Dried Parsley, Sage Extract. The fsa traffic lights for the product are all green except for the salt which is yellow.
You can currently buy this product for 69p and you get 200g in a pot.
