Advantages: Can make a good variety of meals, very tasty, low calorie
Disadvantages: A bit too thick and mild - hmmm...reminds me of a certain politician.
Chicken Tikka Masala - apparently this is Britain's number one favourite dish.
Of course, there's nothing authentically Indian about it at all but that hasn't stopped it spreading over the globe. It's a favourite for a reason: chicken in a tangy sauce, usually based on tomatoes, cream, yoghurt and spices. Yum. As well as being served in restaurants and take-aways it's a popular cooking sauce for home use as well.
So how does the Weight Watchers version stand up?
Contents
The jar serves two, so each half has 175g, 130 calories, and 2 Weight Watchers points. It's a very thick sauce.
Useage
It's a pretty standard 'fry the chicken for a bit then add sauce and simmer for a bit', so very simple. I've experimented with using turkey pieces, pork pieces and quorn as well as chicken and they all work very well. I'm sure it would make a lovely veggie curry as well.
I've even just bunged everything in the slow cooker for a couple of hours and got a very good result.
The sauce is extremely thick and you'll have to scrape around the jar a bit to get it all out. Actually, because it is so thick I find I have to add a bit of water during cooking otherwise it starts sticking at the bottom and burning, so what I do now is add it to get the sauce out of the jar. I pour out what I can, add an inch or so of water, put the lid back on, shake, and then pour out the rest of the slightly diluted sauce. Saves a lot of waste.
Taste
The important bit! Well, you wouldn't know this was a reduced-fat version. It tastes absolutely wonderful and the flavours soak well into the meat, and you get plenty of sauce. It's described as medium strength but I'd say it's quite mild. I only started eating Indian food a couple of years ago, as I hadn't liked what I'd tried in the past as too hot, but this is something you don't need asbestos taste-buds to enjoy if you've got someone a bit unsure. Although personally, I'm quite getting into the hotter stuff now and think this could do with a smidgeon more kick. Sometimes I'll throw in some dried chilli flakes to perk it up a bit.
It's a very 'warming/comforting' taste. My other half loves it too and hasn't noticed anything untoward or 'low fat' about it.
Advantages
Very good flavour, low calorie and WW points if you are craving an Indian, easy to cook with and goes well with different meats.
Disadvantages
So thick you might waste some in the jar, a little bit too mild.
Overall
This has become a regular in my kitchen cupboard, even though I no longer go to Weightwatchers.
Summary: One for the store cupboard.
