Weightwatchers Sausage Casserole Sauce
Advantages: Easy and quick to cook
Disadvantages: Quite thin sauce, can't taste the wine
Being more or less constantly on a diet or at least watching my weight I am always keen to try new slimming products so tried this jar of Weight Watchers sausage casserole. It comes in a 350g jar with a blue lid and label with the Weight Watchers logo, list of ingredients and how to cook the sauce. There is a warning that the product is made in a factory which handles nuts and sesame seeds for those who need to check this before eating.
This is the important part for those on a Weight Watchers diet is that the jar contains 2 Pro Points in half a jar (not sure why they don't say 4 Pro Points for a whole jar but I suppose the smaller number they put on their products makes them more appealing for the dieter.) The label tells you that it is made with tomatoes, haricot bean and red wine, it is low fat and that you can use it with cooked or uncooked sausages.
The cooking instructions tell you to brown four Weight Watchers sausages in a pan before transferring them into an oven proof dish and pouring the sauce over. Cover with a lid and place in a pre heated oven at gas mark 4 (180 Fan 160 C) for one hour. The suggestion is to serve it with mashed potato however I am not too keen on mash and usually have wholemeal rice with this sort of thing.
I actually used four sausages that I had cooked earlier on (from the local butchers and not Weight Watchers so I guess this adds a few calories on to the meal but they are lovely sausages). When I poured the sauce I thought it looked quite watery and the beans were in small pieces so it just didn't impress me very much. It did smell quite spicy though and covered the four sausages okay. As my oven is a fan oven and seems to cook really quickly I checked the casserole after about half an hour and gave it a stir and as I had used cooked sausages took it out of the oven as it was cooked.
I had already cooked the wholemeal rice so when this was drained and the casserole had been left to stand for a while served it onto our plates. Although there was quite a lot of taste to the dish I still felt it was a bit watery in texture and felt it could have been a bit thicker without adding too many calories on. Also I could not taste red wine and although I didn't expect it to be too strongly flavoured with wine I would have expected to have a hint of wine.
I bought this jar from Home Bargains for £1 a few weeks ago but found it is difficult to find in the supermarkets however you can buy 6 jars from Amazon currently for £10.14 and you can also order it from Weightwatchers. Milletts Farm Shop online also advertise it for £1.99 but it looks like a different jar, maybe this is an earlier version of the product. The delivery charge is £3.99 unless you spend over £40 when the delivery is free.
Although I quite enjoyed the meal I didn't think it was anything too special and felt like I was eating sausages in a tomato sauce. Nice quick meal though for midweek and good to keep a jar in the cupboard.
Summary: Easy cook meal for midweek but nothing special
