Advantages: Low price, easy to use
Disadvantages: You may not get it as cheap as I did...
This scanner came to my attention when I had been on the lookout for a scanner to replace my old one, which had unfortunately given up the ghost. At a price of £33 from Jungle.com, it was too good a deal to miss. First impressions are of how the styling has been influenced by the Apple iMac. The one I ordered comes in a rather natty dark translucent green colour. You can order it in a light blue colour, or a more standard beige. Setting it up was a dawdle – install the software first, then simply plug it in via the USB port (this means you can only use it with Windows 98, Win95 support for USB is pretty sparse). Boot up Windows and the scanner starts up and runs its own self tests. The software supplied with the scanner is extremely easy to use. Using the Scanwise software, you can view the image as it appears, tweak the image settings and select how the image will be saved. You can save your scans directly to a JPG image, without requiring to use any additional image acquisition software. My old scanner required you to use software like Paint Shop Pro to acquire images. Additional software supplied includes Corel PrintHouse Magic (a fairly respectable image processing package) and Caere PageKeeper for OCR. At such a low price, you would not expect the image quality to be the highest, but so far I have been very impressed with the scans I have tried. If you can get this deal from Jungle then it is highly recommended – especially as this scanner has an RRP of about £90.

- 09/02/01 I acquired an Agfa 1212u on the same deal just before Christmas. I already had a Mustek 300dpi which proved perfectly OK (this has gone to my son) but as jungle.com was advertising the Agfa at just £33.23 including delivery I decided to get one for the 600dpi capability and USB connection.
It 39;s proved first class and scans far more quickly than the Mustek; it's also more robust, has easy to use yet comprehensive software and came in a translucent green colour that glows wonderfully in the dark.
Beginners will find the Guide To section on the ScanWise software makes the 1212u very easy to use without previous experience.
What is even more surprising is that most vendors are still advertising it at around £65 to £88 including VAT and that includes jungle.com on its dedicated Agfa section!
