Advantages: Good picture quality, Easy to install, Sturdy build

Disadvantages: No batch scan

I spent a while researching film scanners before I went ahead and purchaced one to help me work through the 2000odd old negatives I have to get up on the web for vanities sake.

There were a number of options available in the budget range including some sub 200 pound scanners. In the end I settled for the Canoscan because it was reasonably priced and rated as good quality by a few websites. Also the fact it came with a APS attachment as standard helped me make up my mind.

Setting it up was easy enough. It came with a SCSI 2 card which installed automatically on my Win98SE machine. The bundled software installed fine and sorted out the links with Photoshop6 which I am running for editing.

Within 30 minutes I was ready to rock. The film loader is intuitive and held the negatives firmly. One worry I had was the fact it has no auto load for scanning batched of negatives, but having run through some strips I don't think this is a problem as it scans quickly with astonishing clarity and changing the negative in the frame and moving to the next pic takes only seconds.

The picture quality is very good. I ahev been using flatbeds for a while scanning prints for use by bands for websites and promotional material and there qas no loss in quality, in fact it was clearer in many ways as it is a purer scan coming fron the negative.

I would reccomend this to anyone looking for a film scanner but not willing to jump to the 500+ mark.

Does indeed seem neat. Maybe one to consider when I have more money!
