“ Canon CanoScan FB1210U - Flatbed scanner - A4 - 1200 dpi x 2400 dpi - USB „
This is not a scanner you will find in most retail outlets. I was hunting on the internet and found this favourably reviewed. It's advantages over most scanners in it's class are as follows. It has an awesome scanning capability of 122x2400 d.p.i, which means that you can get real detail, even at high magnification and scans in up to A4 size pages. It has a new generation scanning eye which allows better 3D capapbility, should you wish to scan 3D objects. It has a lid that allows you to put bulky books underneath, and still lies flat. The lid can be replaced with a special one for scanning in colour negatives or slides, at much cheaper than a dedicated slide scanner. Unfortunately, that lid comes spearately for another £60 or so. The installation is easy and problem free, and the software that comes with the scanner is great (photoshop 4 limited edition). The scanner previews every new thing to be scanned, which slows the process down a bit but the quality of the scan is very good indeed. I have enlarged some of the detail in scanned photographs and you could not tell that it had been magnified up, so good was the clarity. I do have a few complaints though. The scanner lid is a bit wobbly and can fall down if you are not careful, which can cause some damage to the fragile mechanism. My scanner came with some fingerprints on the UNDERSIDE of the scanning glass, meaning that I cannot clean them off. I should have sent it back, but so far it hasn't seemed to affect the quality of the scans. The scanner, despite the wonderful specs seems to have some difficulty scanning in documents with fine wavy lines, such as those on certificates. The writing over that background seems to break up and the scan looks very poor in those circumstances. The blackout board supplied for the scanning of slides does not fit properly, and light escapes around the edges of the slide mount, degrading the quality of the slide scan slightly . I haven't seen other scanners in operation so I can't comment on whether this one is better or worse for your money. However, it does almost everything that I want it to with excellent results (except for the certificate thing). And since I got it because I wanted to scan in slides without paying a fortune for a dedicated slide scanner, I am happy with the performance I get.
