Advantages: Compact and looks nice

Disadvantages: A little slow

I recently bought a Canon 630U because I liked it's size and lack of power supply. It is only just a little bigger than a sheet of A4, and takes it's power from the USB socket, so it's impact on your desk is minimal.

The picture quality is very good for a home scanner. I have scanned in pictures and it's easy to make low resolution pictures for web sites and high resolution pictures for printing. When printed the pictures look great.

The actual resolution of the scanner is 600dpi. Like all scanners it makes claims about software interpolated resolution, but this does not achieve much more than making your files bigger. Stick to the physically possible resolution.

The scanner is not the fastest in the world, but it is not painfully slow. I guess that is the price for keeping it small.

The software that comes with the scanner is not bad. There is a photo galery package (Ulead PhotoExpress) which is quite good, and an OCR package (Caere OmniPage) which is a bit basic and which wouldn't install on my PC until I killed the process for the scrolling mouse. Not very user friendly.
