Advantages: Fast, Extremely high-quality scanning, Good support
Disadvantages: Possible unreliability of Copier utility
The Epson Perfection 1250 scanner is a USB model with an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400dpi, at 48bpp colour. The 'Photo' signifies that the model comes complete with the transparency 'backpack' adapter for scanning slides and film. Being USB, the first step when installing the scanner is to load the driver software. This was done under Windows XP Professional, and was simplicity itself. I installed the scanner using the latest Windows XP drivers from the Web; however, later revisions than mine come with a Windows XP-compatible driver CD in the box. All that was necessary was to run the setup program; all the driver files were installed perfectly. Once plugged in, the scanner was immediately recognised by Windows and the drivers were installed. The TWAIN5 driver integrates perfectly with any TWAIN-compliant application, and is equipped with a wealth of controls to tweak image quality. Speaking of image quality, that's another amazing thing about this scanner. While it's fairly quick to scan, it doesn't loose image quality to speed. Photos are almost indistinguishable from the original, and OCR performance is flawless. My only gripe was with the Copier software provided with the unit; it has problems loading if my HP 940C printer is set to default. However, changing the default printer and loading it works fine, so it's not a major problem. Overall, I couldn't recommend this scanner enough. It's simplicity itself to install and use, and extremely reliable.
