Advantages: Neat, small, good results

Disadvantages: A bit slow, Mac version is highly priced

I have owned another ScanSnap prior to this model, the larger S510M and it was very good. So seeing this smaller model, I decided to give it a go and picked one up from BMI Solutions. When it arrived, I was amazed at just how much desk space it saved me, this thing is tiny.

It measures in at 284mm X 95mm X 77mm and weighs just over three pounds. The size is only this small when closed. You have to flip open the top flap and extend a paper support when scanning. You also have to make sure you have some free desk space in front of the scanner. This is so that the paper being scanned has somewhere to cleanly exit the device.

The idea of the S300M (which is the Mac version in a Mac-like white finish) is not for commercial use. Rather private or small business use, to scan and organise your documents. Imagine having a desk full of delivery slips, or telephone bills. Well, you can pop them into the S300M, about 10 sheets at a time (though I manage about 12-15) and press the scan button. The little wonder springs into action and scans either just one side or both sides at the same time. The resulting file is then saved as a PDF. If you organise folders to save into and then make sure you make the important documents searchable, you have a really powerful solution to getting rid of stacks of paperwork. It is quite slow at 16 sides per minute, but this is forgiven due to the ease of use and quality results.

The S300M costs around £260 with a PC version (identical features, just black) for about £50 cheaper. Weird why the PC version is this cheap.

Summary: A really powerful solution to getting rid of stacks of paperwork
