UPDATE It occurred to me the other day that there is one foolproof way to test the quality of a scanner and a printer. Take a nice crisp £20 note and scan it and then print it and also view it in a decent paint package like PhotoShop. Compare the screen display of the scanned note with the original and the closer the screen copy is to the original the better the scanner quality. Compare the printout with the original and the closer the copy is to the original the better the printer. Not exactly kosher and you must destroy the paper copy and picture file afterwards otherwise the Bank of England might have something to say about it not ... Read the complete review

The HP ScanJet 4200Cse is a great scanner for the home use. The 4200C comes in three different packages, (C, Cse & Cxi) the only difference in them is the software that is included. I didn’t have any of the documents only the CD for the software, so I was on my own. I first plugged in the USB cable and then turned on the computer and it automatically recognized the scanner. It tried to load the drivers from the CD and it locked up the computer. Next I rebooted and this time I wouldn’t let Windows 98 install it. I've owned this scanner for over a year now and it has proved to be pratically flawless. I use it for photos, OCR, archeiving, and photocopying. It isn't the highest density scanner available, but it is very easy to setup and use. My favorite features may be the two buttons on the front. Each button will launch an app that will perform a function One allows for immediate printing of what is on the scan bed, great for quick photocopies. The second does a scan that you can use to save into just about any image file. Photos: I did stop using the software that HP included in favor of Paint Shop Pro. I find this a lot easier to use and it ... Read the complete review

I've had this scanner for a year now, and think it is just great. Of course, in terms of quality, it is a little difficult to tell. The pictures coming out of your printer will be naff if your printer is naff, no matter how good the scanner. But I have been getting 'chemist quality' photos out of my printer, so the scanner must have been holding up its end of the deal. More importantly, for a technobuffoon like me, this scanner is really easy to use. The installation was dead easy - and it comes as either USB or parallel port, which means I don't need to rip out my printer lead every three minutes. The software itself is stunningly easy, and self ... Read the complete review
