Advantages: USB simplicity, great quality images, lowish cost
Disadvantages: None I can think of
I recently bit the bullet and pensioned off my trusty old DIY hybrid PC for a Gateway 2000 machine which included a Visioneer 4400 USB scanner as part of the deal. With so many new goodies to play with the scanner spent almost 2 weeks in the unopened box before I eventually got around to installing it. If I had any reservations about connecting the unit up, then I shouldn't have been worried at all, it was easy peasy..... The second my son inserted the USB cable to the back of the PC it instantly recognised the scanner and prompted the software installation. The scanner comes with Scansoft Paperport deluxe scanning software which is easy to use, TextBridge Pro V8.0 OCR software from Xerox and MGI Photosuite III. This software package alone justifies most of the cost of the scanner. I have had experience of scanners in the past (an aging HP job at work, cost over £300 at the time) and I was not impressed with the results. Poor image quality and huge file sizes made it almost impractical for use. Let me tell you things have changed and technology has advanced in this department, the results from the 4400 USB are absolutely stunning. I use the scanner for a number of purposes : 1) I use Ebay's online auction site and the scanner is brilliant for getting pictures of my items onto eBay. 2) I use the scanner for archiving important correspondence, bank statements, invoices, receipts etc. Always immediately to hand when I need them ! 3) Electronic photo albums from 35mm snaps. I didn't think I needed a scanner in my life, it was low down on my list of priorities and had it not been bundled with my Gateway I wouldn't have one now. What a loss that would have been, it's an excellent acquisition and well worth the money. If I've tempted you to look seriously at a scanner, take a look at this one you won't be disappo
inted. Cost £80 approx although special offers have reduced to as low as £40 !
