Advantages: Detailed comprehensive cd, tutor on hand when I needed additional support

Disadvantages: It's not as convenient as being there in person

I had seen a mixed bag of reviews regarding Distance Learning before I finally took the decision to jump into this new learning. At the time it was made clear to me for someone who wished to pursue a career in accountancy that Sage was a software package which would be very important to learn. So with that, I ordered Sage Line 50 off the Learn Direct website. The price was fairly cheap and certainly considering the benefit of undertaking the course, it was worth paying. I received my delivery a couple of days later. The delivery contained instructions and the cd I would need to access the information.

In addition to this, I also had the option of emailing the tutor for support or indeed contacting them. There were a series of set tasks which I was required to do in order to ensure that I understood what I was learning and secondly to ensure that I was serious in doing this. At first I was a little taken aback by the software having never used this program before but quickly came to terms with it.

The cd provided step by step instructions to help me understand the concepts and features and provided work exercise to undertake, which would underpin that knowledge. I thought the whole process ran quite smoothly and when I did need to get in contact with a tutor, it was usually within a 24 hour period that I had a reply. The problem with written explanations is that they can sometimes require a more detailed answer to clarify problem areas. Therefore I was impressed that I received a call back from the tutor when I needed it.

Obviously the tutor can only provide help for so many students at once and this is understandable but I appreciated that the tutor was reachable soon enough. The course went well, I obtained a lot more knowledge of Sage and subsequently this knowledge has come in handy. I am not sure if I was one of the lucky ones, or perhaps things have improved, either way, I would definitely undertake distance learning again.

Summary: Distance learning can go smoothly
