Its all about what you put into it!

Advantages: you can do it at home, you work at your own pace, wide variety of subjects
Disadvantages: you need to motivate yourself, you need to check your supplier carefully
I think distance learning can be hard - at the end of the day no one is going to do it for you! You have to put the effort in yourself. I dropped out of several OU courses beacuse I took on far more than I could handle. I forgot that its down to me to make it work.
That said I think there are some down right dodgy distance learning providers out there and it is really important to be able to determine the difference. I found this 10 Questions to ask section really helpful.
It advises you on the best questions to ask your supplier and points out some really interesting things like some providers pay their tutors per query so it is in their interest to be unhelpful! I couldnt believe that - it really counteracts the whole idea of tutor help. I also handn't realised how not customer centric some organisations were.
Summary: As long as you are motivated and prepared to do your due dilligence a great option.
