distance learning with DLC
Author Name: Claire
Advantages: home study to get to uni, support
Disadvantages: can get a bit lonely, but DLC forum is great
I've been studying with the Distance Learning Centre on an Access to Midwifery Diploma for about a year ... and I've just finished! Got a place at UWE starting in September and I couldn't have done it without them. It really is a case of having the motivation and drive to do it - but Midwifery is what I've always wanted to do and the DLC have helped me to realise my dream. They provide all the course materials and there are only a couple of Biology books that you need to get. But I'll be using them during my degree anyway, so I wasn't bothered about that. Because it's distance learning I was really worried about the amount of support I'd get. But it really wasn't an issue. My tutor responded to my emails on the same day, often within a couple of minutes. And speaking to her on the phone every week (even if it was just a nag to make me do some work!) made me feel like I wasn't alone. Although it's hard work, it was totally worth it. I had no GCSEs when I started and honestly thought that I'd never be able to realise my dream. But it was never a problem, and with my tutor's support any reservations I had about my own abilities disappeared really quickly. I'd really recommend distance learning and the DLC - if you want to go to university and reach that dream that seemed a million miles away then why hesitate!!?!!
Summary: i'd recommend them. without them i'd still be working in an office
