Advantages: insane people, good food, teachings good to be fair
Disadvantages: work, coursework, homework
King Eds college is quite good if you want to have an education. There are lot of people there who don't and they will screw up and get rubbish marks. there's also a lot of people who do go to oxford and cambridge so dont worry if you are a clever person you're in good company.
In my time at king eds i have only done psychology history german french critical thinking music technology music theory key skills and general studies so i can only comment on those in terms of teaching. Psychology is cool in the first year, the coursework's a little bit scary unless you already have some knowledge of psychology and ability at writing up experiments. Teaching is very good but in the second year it gets very technical and goes into rubbish biological stuff and that's kinda hard. i still wouldnt recommend resits so get it done.
historys good once you get into it. the teachers are very experienced and some (hello matt marshall) may even share with you some army stories. it is cool though and when you get into russian revolution and stalin it becomes loads of fun.
german, well, i got a quite bad result for german but i can say that Thomas is a great guy you can have a laugh with and he's also not bad at his languages (he knows about 79 of them). you should also expect to get given a language assistant who in my case had big scary hair, made jokes about me that didnt cross cultural barriers well and made it out like he fancied me and stolen my guitar to play it. enjoy.
i did french for one week. enough said.
critical thinking was the most fun subject ive had in my time. it was helped by the fact i had some HILARIOUS year 13s in the group (Nitz is the king). The work gets nice and easy as you go along and it all clicks into place. you get your mock exams nice and early so by the time summer comes you are rocking. the teaching again is cool but you do need a couple of fit girls in short skirts in the group to hel
p the time go by.
Music tech rocks. you get to do sequencing of songs though the mozart one is boring and you get to record your own arrangement. mine has a cello in it im very proud. also my good mate ian cole is in the group. read this when he becomes famous! there are 2 music teachers. chris is great, ruth can be a bit scary but otherwise shes cool
Music theory - well it taught me music theory to grade 5 and it did it from scratch so well done ruth on that one.
key skills and general studies are RUBBISH and a complete waste of time. you have to go or else the college has a strop but theyre only good for building up your poker skills.
i go to the christian union there every week. 24:7 is a cool gang led by the most amazing people in the world. ok not really me and my mates lead it but gods blessing it loads and thats cool. we are doing our second college christian gig on april 30th called Elevation. Nlighten (www.nlighten.nn.to) and my band Naked Cross (www.nakedcross.tk) are playing. chawn hill's dave bowen will be there he's cool. he was even on tv. if you're interested they meet on thursday lunches in D3. one thing you will need to know about king eds is you do get the odd crazy scary teacher like a certain history teacher. you also get insane kids too. in my first year i got my friend ben downing and his friends standing on a bench outside in the rain alone one lunchtime reading out a preprepared homage to stalin for his 50th anniversary of being dead. i myself have been busking in the crown centre outside college with my electric guitar and no amp and made 2 quid! i bought cold chicken for lunch.
theres a lot of cool places to go for lunch around college. you have david's deli which will do you a quality hot roast pork and stuffing baguette for 1.80, theres firkins which used to have a great discount card but they changed it and now they're rubbish. theres
a greggs that gets full quickly and in the ryemarket centre theres a couple of cake shops a pet shop if ur into that and a woolworths. oh and theres a walter smith where u can get a whole roast chicken for 3 quid.
or you might want to stay in college. the JCR is a crowded fire hazard of a diner with a canteen and lots of tables where people crowd round to play cards. the food theres ok and generally under a quid but its always packed at lunches. also, dont become part of the JCR crew. you'll understand when you get there.
so now you're thinkin dan you've answered all my questions whats the one crucial question left? is the place overrun by muso's or by drama students. well, no. muso's generally dont leave the music corridor except to get their student soup from the french deli, and drama students only tend to walk briefly past the court.
the college has just implemented a stupid lock on the doors which means if youre late for lesson the teachers just close the door and let you stay outside if theyre not happy.
king eds is a fun place to go. the people are friendly and charmingly insane, the teachers know their stuff. i would rate it highly though what's annoying is they keep tryin to make you do work. grr. oh well i guess having A levels isnt a bad thing.
