Advantages: amazing teachers and facilities.
Disadvantages: Expensive, but worth it
Tonbridge School is located in Tonbridge, Kent... No surprise there then.
it is an all boys school that teaches 13-18 year old boys, finished with A levels.
The scholl was founded in the 1500s by Sir Andrew Judde and the company of skinners.
The school is organised around Houses, which are divided into houses for day boys and houses for boarders. there are or were 12 houses, each of which has a name. A boy stays in his house throughout his time in tonbridge, eating and congregating there but all boys are taught in the main school buildings together. Boarding houses contain roughly 60 people and day houses a little more. Altogether the school has around 750-800 students, approximatly 500 of which are borders.
The school's academic timetable is arranged on a 10 day cycle, which at first is very confusing, however after a week or so becomes second nature and works out better than a normal week cycle. This is because if you are unlucky enough to get double maths with mr evans on a friday evening then you will forever hate fridays, but with the ten day cycle what you have every friday rotates depending on what day of the cycle you are on, so you end up having double maths one friday in five.
The timetabling allows for alot of time for scheduled sports, usualy rugby, cricket and hockey in the three terms. Other sports are also available including football, swimming, shooting, cross country and athletics. The only rule is that everyone has to do a sport, although after a while you will work out the system and there are ways around this if you are wiley enough!! In my opinion though this is one of the best aspects of the school as it really gets you involved and keeps you active up to 4 times a week not including scheduled matches on a saturday against other schools in the area.
The teachers at Tonbridge are on the whole truly fantastic, with the vast majority of them being totally captivating on there chosen subject. However there are some exceptions to this rule, however i have to stress that they are very few and very far between.
The overall atmosphere at tonbridge is one of prosperity and growth and is a truly wonderful environment in which to learn and grow up. I was a boarder there for 5 years while my parents lived on the other side of the world and i loved it. The best sign of when a school has done its job is when at the end of your time there you are ready to leave and are pushing against the confines it places upon you.
i would recommend Tonbridge as a school to everyone although i do agree that while boarding may not be suitable for everyone, almost anyone can fit in.
Summary: a truly remarkable school that provides an excellent foundation on which to continue.
