Booked wedding cake months in advance with jean, only for her to email us a week before the wedding saying she could no longer make our wedding day to set up so she wanted to set the cake up 36 hours before our wedding left out uncovered collecting dust and drying out. She didnt see a problem with this but we payed £500 this cake and didnt see this as a good service. Had to cancel our order and try to find someone else with only a week til our wedding. She let us down and put us under alot of stress. DO NOT RISK YOUR DAY BEING RUINED BY JEAN.
As you may see from previous reviews I have been covering different aspects and services I used for my wedding, one of the many things we needed to arrange for the day was our wedding cake. Again we wanted to use someone reasonably local as well as reasonably priced. I didn't really know where to go for this sort of thing, however during a trip to a local wedding fayre whilst me and my mum were looking around various stalls one cake in particular caught our eye so we decided to wonder over to the stall and have a look. This stall was run my a lady called Jean with her own cake business called Amazing Cake by Jean. After sampling her cake I had already decided I had to have that cake it was perfect and just what I was looking for.
Amazing Cakes by Jean is run from the home of Jean in a village called Elmswell just outside of Bury St Edmunds. She makes and decorates all of her cakes herself, personalising them to your needs no matter what the design, size or occasion. She has an online gallery as well as an information book containing hundreds of different designed cakes Jean is happy to work with you and adapt or create any cake you require.
As I have mentioned we met Jean at a wedding fayre held at Tattersalls in Newmarket where we live, she covers a range of wedding fayres in the area, the day that we met her she had quite a large range of sample cakes on display in a variety of styles and colours, as well as having samples of the cake itself to taste. Obviously we were looking for a wedding cake, but Amazing Cakes by Jean has a lot more to offer, the website covers the full range of cakes available. Jeans website is very brightly coloured and welcoming, the home page contains a picture of Jean and her kitchen along with a brief introduction of her and her business. Listed down the side of the Home page are links to other pages such as the gallery, prices, contact details and so on. The gallery includes pictures of cakes which she has made in the past and these are all divided up into sections such as 'Wedding cakes', 'children's cakes' and many more. Whilst the website does give a rough price guide exact prices do need to be obtained by talking to Jean to assess exactly what it is you require. Personally when we were choosing our wedding cake I didn't really look at the website as I already had my heart set on what cake I wanted after visiting the wedding fayre, however we did have to choose our cake topper by looking at the website and I was impressed with how easy it was to navigate around.
Jean is happy to make cakes to cover any occasion or celebration including
Whatever the celebration is Amazing Cakes by Jean is likely to have something suitable, or if there is nothing you fancy in the gallery existing designs can be altered to suit your needs and the event.
The cake we chose was a 3 tier white iced wedding cake, each tear had stings of diamantes around it as well as around the silver trays the cakes were on, the topper on the cake was made of large clear crystal sprays sat in a diamante ring. Compared to some wedding cakes ours was quite simple but very pretty, the diamantes and crystals really sparkled in the light and everyone commented on how pretty it was.
Each tear of our cake was on a separate stand rather than the tears being stacked on top of each other. the silver stand was hired from Jean and set the cake off perfectly, we had to pay £100 deposit for the stand, however this was refunded as soon as it was returned undamaged, we had to return it ourselves otherwise there would have been a charge, my parents returned ours and it wasn't too much hassle as Jean only lives about a 30 minutes drive away from us.
Our cake was made of 2 tears of sponge cake with the top tear being fruit cake, however this is not all Amazing Cakes by Jean has to offer, as well as the traditional sponge and fruit cakes she also offers chocolate sponge, lemon sponge and even chocolate crunch, if there's anything else you require Jean is happy to discuss your requirements. The cakes made my Amazing Cakes by Jean are nothing like the regular celebration cakes you buy in the supermarkets, the sponges are light and moist with the fruit cakes being very rich and moist. You could really tell that the cakes were homemade rather than mass made, the sponge really was light, fluffy and moist as described, it had a light butter cream to hold the sections together and also to hold the icing on. The icing used on the cakes is very soft and again has a lovely light texture to it, I often find icing on cakes can be a it heavy and too sickly sweet, although the icing on the cake was quite thick it was not over the top, the same type of icing was used on both our sponge and fruit cake and complimented then both nicely.
We could have had the 3 tiers of our cake made in any size we wanted to suit the amount of guests we had coming, we even altered the sizes of the cakes at the last minute as we didn't think what we had selected would be big enough. Jean is happy to make very large cakes no matter what the event, her gallery shows some of the large corporate cakes she has made in the past for various business, all fully iced with a lot of time and care being taken with the detail. As well as being able to make cakes of any size she is also happy to make cakes of all shapes, we could even have our wedding cake in whatever shape we wanted including, squares, hexagons or heart shapes, there really was a large choice.
As have mentioned prices really are individual to the cake you require however guide prices for Jeans cakes include
*A simple design serving 20 people - £50.00
*Cakes serving over 50 people works out at about £1.00 to £2.00 per serving
*A simply designed 3 tier wedding cake measuring 6", 8" and 10" in diameter starts at £265.00
*A simply designed 3 tier wedding cake measuring 8", 10" and 12" starts at £295.00
These are only rough guide prices and obviously the bigger and more elaborate cake you have the more expensive it is. Our cake as I have said was a 3 tier cake measuring 8", 10" and 12" in diameter and cost us £450.00, whilst this is quite expensive for a cake there was plenty to go around all the guests and is was well worth the money, it was made and decorated to a very high standard, we could not criticise the cake in any way, we knew the cake was going to be of excellent quality but it was so much better than we could have imagined.
I would definitely recommend Amazing Cakes by Jean to anyone looking for a cake for any celebration in the area, Jean is happy to attend the venue wherever the cake is required and set up, our wedding reception was at the Rowley Mile Racecourse and she attended the venue the morning of the wedding and when we arrived the cake was in place and set up. We were not charged any extra for setting up due to it being reasonably local to where she lives, however there may be a small setting up charge for venues slightly further away. This is definitely a company I would recommend and I would certainly consider using Amazing Cakes by Jean in the future for any celebration cakes.
