Advantages: girl only space, fun, completely rocks!
Disadvantages: none
As a brownie guider for over 5 years, i feel i can discuss this in great depth!
Brownies is part of the guide association, and is aimed at girls aged between 7 and 11 years old (5-7's are rainbows and 10-15's are guides). Although brownies are often commonly associated with churches because they tend to meet in them, it is not a christian movement, and is open to girls belonging to all faiths!
Each brownie unit is run in a different way, because all leaders are volunteers and bring their own style. Units do however, all run on the basic principles andresources.
As they are probably best known, brownies can earn lots of badges! these are no longer sewn on a brown dress, but on their funky uniform, be that a sash, gilet or hoody (up to the unit). Badges include swimmng, craft, hobbies, out and about and cook.
Brownies have the chance to do lots of different activities. Some units have sleepovers, pack holidays or go camping! some units run adventurous activities such as archery, or fun days out to the local science museum.
The girls learn about teamwork in brownies, as they are placed with in 'sixes' which govern themselves to a degree and give the girls some indepenance and responsibilty.
As i say, every brownie unit differs, but the one thing they all have in common is that they provide a safe girl only space for young girls to learn, have fun and interact.
If you have a duaghter of brownie age i really really do recommend it! check out www.girlguiding.org.uk
Summary: All girls should give it a go!
