Advantages: none
Disadvantages: waste of time
The Citizens Advice service helps people resolve their legal, money and various other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice.
There is usually a Citizens Advice Bureau in your local village. They are open at set times a few days a week. You don't need to book in but beware that queues can build quickly - usually of people who have nothing better to do on a weekday morning (but prehaps thats just my experience).
Unfortunately I didn't have a good experience with the Citizens Advice Bureau. I went to get some advice about a bad tenant I had in one of my houses. I waited in the waiting area for about an hour before someone could see me. When I was ushered in the 'adviser' couldn't tell me anything that I didn't already know and wouldn't give me further advice incase the bad tenant brought a claim!! I was told to see a solicitor. Unbelievable.
It seems that if you're in the wrong or unemployed the CAB is the place to go, otherwise leave well alone and see a solicitor, it'll cost you more but its well worth it. Wait a minute with legal aid the unemployed get free solicitors anyway - what a joke, why are they clogging up the CAB?!!! OK rant over.
Summary: dont bother

- 27/05/09 I had a bad experience with them too, but I think it was more to do with the individual volunteer, than the organisation itself. I had a long wait to be seen, but I expected that as it's a drop-in service and they have masses of people to see. |

- 27/05/09 I'm afraid I need to disagree - the citizens advice got involved with a claim I had and I ended up with a payout of over 2 grand - they are not all bad! x |
