Disadvantages: Celebrities gain a higher profile
Oh dear I think I may well upset the applecart......I'm afraid I cannot stand Comic Relief. I don't really know what it is, but the whole thing doesn't sit easily with me. I know it's for a good cause, I know I should be charitable but something at the back of my mind tells me a lot of so called stars have profited extremely well on the back of other people's distress, starvation and deprivation. If we look at Lenny Henry for example. Prior to Comic Relief, his career was in the doldrums, in fact it was beyond the doldrums. Bob Geldof creates Band Aid which I was and still am totally impressed by and hey ho, a year or so later Lenny comes up with Comic Relief! I know some of you will be saying that Bob Geldof's career was also rapidly going downhill before Live Aid/Band Aid, but his idea was unique and his own. Additionally he had the good grace not to carry on year in year out living off the back of it, in other words he was dignified. Wearing silly red noses, also seems to me to be inappropriate in the face of human starvation, degradation, humiliation and repression. It just seems neither dignified or caring to behave in this way. Should we really have to be entertained to give to others in such need? I'm sure any help is welcomed by the poor people concerned, but I wonder if any of them feel angry at the way it is collected. Second rate so called stars suddenly appear out of nowhere and their careers are suddenly revitalised. Take for example our own Anthea bloody Turner. She's got loads of money, she's got no talent, she's taken all sorts of magazines to the cleaners in payouts and legal suits and here she is again in our faces in a Celebrity Big Brother. Why doesn't she just donate a huge sum to Charity if she feels so concerned? Sorry, I'm cynical....I know I am and I wish I could end this by putting forward a better idea to collect the money an
d I do of course give to charities of my choice. I also realise I am privileged not to be in the same situation as those poor people, but Governments are elected to take care of different countries finances and social issues, why can't they get their acts together and sort it out. Perhaps Tony Blair and Co could do a Government Aid where they all wear silly hats or something and donate a month of their huge salaries to others in need. I'll be turning off I'm afraid - I've had it with this year in and year out..Somebody come up with something original PLEASE.

- 13/03/01 Thank you to all who commented. I was not making the point that we should not be charitable, merely trying to point out that in my opinion Comic Relief is somewhat distasteful. Nothing anyone has said has changed my mind about that I'm afraid. |

- 13/03/01 Mrbeck's comments are all very well, but I think his rating is pants. I would have said it has to be at least useful because it's well written, articulate and starts a debate. |

- 12/03/01 Ann, do you give to charities which help homeless people here and those who are starving in Africa? If you do, then fantastic. But most people don't. It's a shame, but there it is. Secondly, would you be prepared to pay more tax so that money could go directly to those starving in Africa? Would you give a homeless person your coat on a cold winter's night? I doubt it, because I know I wouldn't. It is harsh, and callous, but there it is. Comic Releif may be looking slightly tired, but the point is it still makes money. If it didn't, they would stop. I do understand your feelings towards Comic Releif, becasue I feel the same way about aggressive Big Issue sellers, but I woundn't want them to stop. If it makes money for those in need, then let them carry on, and good luck to them. |
