Advantages: organised, helpful and always seemed to go that extra step
Disadvantages: i guess some times needing a solicitor can be a down side
I don't know if anyone out there is prepared for when a family member passes away but when it happens it's good to know that there are people and services around to walk you through what to do.
A few years ago a family member passed away suddenly. He was a healthy man in his mid 60's so we didn't see it coming. Once the initial shock had started to ease we began thinking of all the things that needed to be sorted. The funeral service company was brilliant for the actual service itself and all the things that go along with that so we only needed to say what we wanted and it was done. As for his house, belongings and accounts/bills we were at a loss. We entered his house (hadn't been there for a long time as we'd always meet up somewhere out of the house) to find a mass of paperwork. He had kept every receipt and every peice of paper dating back to the early 1990's! It took a good week to sort everything into piles and date order but we managed it. My partner got onto Loyds bank to see if they would help to sort out the estate. They were very friendly and helpful as I think they are fully aware that it's an emotionally delicate situation when some one has passed away. Unfortunately the estate came under the amount for them to work with so they passed us onto a solicitor. The soliciting company came with high recommendations from Loyds who said they use them on many occasions.
I did get a bit confused as I was waiting for them to then pass us onto some one else and so on but thankfully not. The first person we spoke with was with us the whole way through which was very comforting. There was one other epson involved as they split the state into bills and house sale (alongside the estate agents) but we only ever spoke to the one person about both things. Our account manager kept in contact with us constantly over the year it took to sell the house and everything was handled very smoothly. In a time where it's hard to sell properties they worked very hard with the estate agents to get us the best price for the property and kept us informed of the visits made to the house.
We asked at one point for some one to check on the house as we live to far away to do it ourselves and the account manager sorted out some one from the estate agents to give it a look over and ensure it was ok.
Once the house sale had gone through, bills paid, and pension sorted we were given a final work out of what money went where and why and what was left to be shared among the brothers. I have to admit for the amount of work they seemed to put in the charged at the end was quite small! I'm never one to complain about paying too little but I really thought they were going to charge more!
Irwin Mitchell made sorting things out easy and painless and at a time when we needed to focus more on family they allowed us to do just that!

We have represented clients in high profile cases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the Hatfield rail disaster. And we continue to challenge legislation with landmark cases, including the breast cancer drug Herceptin.
