“ The Lighter Life programme aims to assist controlled weight loss whilst at the same time promoting greater understanding of food issues. „
hello my name is jude i managed to loose 10 stone on my own , my starting off weight was an incrediable 24 and a half stones and a dress size of 30 . then as usual my weight started to go back on and that made me panic as i didn't want to gain all the weight i managed to loose , so i decided to go on the lighter life program and i lost 5 stones in 4 months and now down to a size 8 and down to 9 -6 lbs and my weight has NOT gone back on ...
just one word of advice though if after loosing your weight you must NOT expect to eat as you did before as your body will except any thing you give it food wise and you WILL be back to being FAT again , you have to accept a different out look on your diet , my diary i say eat normally 20% of the time and diet 80% of the time and you WILL NOT gain weight .......
I did the LighterLife Lite programme Jan-Mar 2009 and lost around 3 stone. I was delighted at the weightloss, once I got myself on the programme I enjoyed the feeling of getting lighter and lighter. I have managed to maintain my weight now for 2 years, but, and this is a big BUT..... I have had to radically change my way of eating. Radically. For ever. End of.
Here is how: I eat very few carbs..... only 100% rye bread, no wheat except when I make cakes with spelt flour, no pasta, rice, potatoes, crisps. I eat oat cakes. Oh, and porridge oats.
I have gained almost a stone but my weight was very low when I stopped. This is because I ate too many sweet things, chocolate, cakes etc over Christmas/Easter and the habit dribbles into the rest of the year. But if you look at how much I eat on a daily basis, it is very little.
I'd like to lose those few pounds I have gained so I am cutting out the sugar, chocolate etc. My meals consist largely of vegetables and salad with good protein, oily fish, eggs, little cheese, very occasional red meat, and seeds.
So everyone who is reading these reviews .... it does work but in order to maintain the weight loss, a radical diet change is required. Oh, and one other thing, hair loss is a very common side effect..... my long blonde hair fell out and is now wavy!
Hello, I did the 100 days on Lighter Life in 2007 and lost 4.5 stones (about 65lbs) .... I had already started off on my own losing 3st before that. I came of it, didn't do the maintenance programme but continued to lose for another 3 months by eating soup and salad. I then had a lot to deal with in 2008 and began very slowly to gain as I gradually began to eat carbs again. i had been going to the gym 3 times a week which i did for two years until I sustained an injury which then left me unable to hardly walk.... in August 2010 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia which it appears I had been struggling with for years and altho I had coped on a day to day basis I now found in 2010 I could not cope. I am in pain 99.9% of the time and have gained every single lb back again. The LL diet slows the metabolism right down and so does Fibromyalgia. In my opinion LL did not cause the fibro but I am convinced it has been a contibuting factor in my declining health. Whilst on it I had complained a few times about my muscles aching and my stomach reacting to the packs. (It appears Fibro has a direct conection to the gut) The other thing I found is that even tho I had been a healthy eating vegetarian consuming hippy type diet prior to LL (and I now realise why my metabolism was already low before going on the diet - i.e. the undiagnosed fibro) once off LL I had unbearable carb cravings unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
My conclusion: Although as a desperate person - desperate to lose weight rather than live this hell, I was truly grateful for the weightloss. I believe they have not researched this enough. To be told repeatedly that metabolism defect is a myth is wrong.... which is what the councellors will tell you. Being misunderstood, desperation and utter determination will drive anyone to eat nothing for 100days ..... surely there is a madness in this?
I would really like to hear from others who may feel their Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, M.E. might have been exacerbated through being on LL.
I've been on the LL program for almost 12 weeks and I have lost 4 stones (56 Lbs.) In all honesty, the first week was very tough, but after the initial week was over, it has been totally doable! I am not one with much will power and I have tried for more than 20 years to lose weight. I experienced none of the medical issues some have mentioned here, although I have followed the program to the letter. I Drink plenty of water and check myself every two weeks with my GP. And even though I have eaten regular foods in two or three occasions in the 12 weeks due to anniversaries and birthdays, I do not cheat on this program. Low impact-Cardio workout twice a week is a huge plus and helps with firming the skin. I recommend LL to anyone who wants to change their life!!!
I have just begun my third try at Lighterlife. If I'm honest, I didn't fully commit the second time and was constantly cheating, in grand style. The first time around was terrific. I dropped from 16st 10lbs to 13st 10lbs, UK22 to UK16/14, ( I excersied a lot) in 14 weeks. Sadly, the death of a loved one saw me drift from the programme, even before the 14 week initial period had ended. I returned for a few weeks, but found that due to the grief I was feeling, the last thing I wanted to do was work on my emotional issues; I wanted to hide away.
Even so, it was around 9 months before I began piling weight back on. On a subconscious level my attitude to food had changed, but unfortunately, this did not last. I am convinced the reason for this is that I did not complete the programme - I didn't reach my goal weight, nor did I complete the route to management.
I remember feeling full of energy and glowing when on abstinence, apart from the first week. I don't recall significant hair-loss, if any. Whenever I was unable to drink enough water I found myself feeling hungry, and constipated, (sorry to mention it!) water is your friend on this plan, but please remember to sip 3 to 4 litres throughout the day, not all in one go! V. dangerous. Exercise is also important, you're body is going to change very quickly so I would recommend making it fit and strong.
This is no easy fix, it takes dedication, and the hardest part is maintaining your weight-loss. The answer is to complete the programme and not to behave the same way you did whilst piling on the weight in the first place. I guess this is the key to all diets. On LL you're counselling should guide you.......me.
Fingers crossed this will be my last diet - then I begin working on being slim for life.........
Make up your own mind - but know all of the facts first - and know that the councellors will not provide you with all of the facts.
Yes, you lose weight on Lighterlife, but that's because you're starving your body. I did this plan, and lost over 5 stone in 3.5 months - Great - I looked fab. But the doctor took a blood test when my hair started to fall out - turns out my thyroid has been affected, which has a long term impact on my metabolisim. This diet has long term health impacts on many people (based on myself and my friends that have done the programme) - and the councellors will never provide you the real details about this. The cognative therapy is good - learning to look at food differently is key. But for the same money (I was paying £65 per week) you can hire a personal trainer to tailor a programme to suit you, and get cognative therapy councelling. Quick wins cost you not only in money - if you have a lot of weight to lose, think about how long it took you to gain that weight - give yourself time. Anyway - with a personal trainer you can lose a lot of weight quickly too and strengthen (not weaken) your body at the same time.
I felt i had to write a review after reading one from another member saying 'Join Weight Watchers instead', this made me so angry i had to join this site! Most people who do Lighter Life have alot of weight to lose, i myself will be giving the programme a second go in the next few weeks - i failed to finish it the first time due to having a breakdown so put on the four stone i lost and alot more.
I feel Lighter Life should be called a programme rather than a diet, many of us before L.L will have tried every diet going, i know i have! I have even had pills from my doctor and been told i would qualify for a gastric band or bypass operation, i believe surgery is not the answer and it has its own side effects, much worse than L.L.
Lets say i join Weight Watchers, i have ten to eleven stone to lose and if i lose it at the rate of 2lbs per week... 52 weeks in a year... 14 lb in a stone... god, i will be dieting for nearly two years! Paying a weekly fee but no councelling ... and by previous experinces no promise of achieving my goal weight. ummm. Or there is Lighter Life. Unless you have a weight issue you will never understand!!
The counceller i had was amazing, she had done the programme her self, kept the weight off and was inspiring us to do the same. It makes you really think about everything you do with food. When i was on the programme with all the support i was flying. Lighter life saves people. End of.
IF I CAN DO IT ANYONE CAN
The Lighter Life Programme is a weight management programme for those who have over three stone to lose or a body mass index over 30. It is suitable for both men and women.
It is a medically monitored programme which involves cutting out food totally in order to achieve weight loss!!!
The object of the programme is to move you away from daily foodstuffs which contribute to your excess weight. Sounds crazy but it really works.
I completed the Lighter Life programme over 4 years ago and it improved my health and diet. The programme uses wholly nutritional food packs which contain all the vitamins and minerals required for a healthy lifestyle. You consume 4 food packs a day, which come in a selection of soups, shakes or bars. Along with the food packs you should also drink at least two litres of water a day or at least enough to ensure you feel comfortable and don't become dehydrated, in which you would suffer with headaches or even start to feel hungry. You can also drink black coffee or tea with sweeteners if required and two sachets of Lighter Life Savoury drink, which I found very helpful and tasty. There are also some Lighter life water flavours available which I never tried but were very popular.
Sounds crazy, impossible, will never work, dangerous almost!!!
All these thoughts ran through my head but the desire to lose weight intrigued me so I gave it a go, and what's more it worked. I lost almost 5 stone in the early days and kept it off for over a year, I had a flat stomach which I loved but on the downside I looked gaunt and aged. At first I ignored this because I loved being so slim however I didn't get the reaction from family and friends I had hoped for. I have since put on just over a stone in weight and it is amazing the reaction I receive from people. This is not just from close family and friends but also from people who didn't see me in the early days of weight loss. My husband much prefers my look now and I am certainly so much fitter and enjoying a variety of outdoor activities which I would never have tried in my over weight era.
IT'S EASY - HONEST
The programme uses food packs because it is easier to lose weight by cutting out food altogether. Just like an alcoholic should stay away from alcohol rather than having the occasional glass. The difference being for the food addict this is just a short term measure until the weight is off. The food packs contain everything you body requires and conform to government standards and regulations.
Along with the food packs you attend weekly sessions run by qualified counsellors using specialised counselling techniques to help you work through your food addictive problems. You work in single sex groups examining thoughts, feelings and behaviours that have contributed to you being overweight.
Once you have reached the weight you want to be, there is a management programme in which you look at why you eat and what you eat. In order to be successful in keeping the weight off you have to change old habits. Returning to your previous lifestyle will only make you put back on the weight and more. This programme offers so much more than a weekly weigh in!
Like I said it is easy, but you have to stick at it and go at it whole heartedly.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes of course, it is government approved and Lighter Life work closely with medical experts. They only have your interests at heart. But it is important that you follow the programme correctly in order for it to work. During the weight loss phase you are likely to be better nourished than you have ever been and feel wonderful.
While you're on Lighter Life you take in fewer calories than your body needs, so you begin to use the energy from your reserves. First you'll use up glycogen stored in your liver, which can make you feel a bit yucky. I heard some women complain of headaches and feeling really hungry for a couple of days. Once this is used up, after a few days, you'll start to use body fat and so lose weight, and begin to feel an awful lot better. I was lucky I only suffered the early stage for 24 hours and I then felt the healthiest I have ever felt and slept like a top!
Food packs play a vital role in ensuring that you get the necessary nutrients and vitamins your body needs. Over four decades of research have gone into developing them and they are constantly improving the consistency and taste. I understand there is now a huge variety of flavours available. Lighter life food packs are also suitable for vegetarians.
They are tasty and very easy to make up, perfect for those of us with extremely busy lives, and you never have to think about what to make for dinner when you get home. Well maybe I am one of the lucky ones, not being a great cook my husband certainly didn't want me making his meals when I was on the diet!!
IS IT EXPENSIVE?
Depends on your view of expensive? It costs around £70 per week but that is your total food requirement for a whole week, along with specialized counselling sessions which really allow you to explore your own mind and giving confidence to do things you never thought possible.
STARTING THE PROGRAMME
Lighter Life has a website with a list of counsellors and should have one in your area. You telephone the counsellor and make an appointment to find out more about the programme. Really think it through before embarking. Once starting the programme the first few days can be awful, almost like withdrawal symptoms from alcohol but I promise this is short lived and you will soon feel wonderful.
Go on; give a counsellor a call now. www.lighterlife.com
This review is also on Ciao (Helen of ellon) and written in my early days.
Lighterlife is a life saver.
This is my second time on lighterlife, the first time i managed 3 months and lost 4 stone before my student loan ran out! THIS time, my husband is working and I'm in it for the long haul. When I ran out of money last time I tried a few packs from cheaper sites online which claim to be just like lighterlife to try and keep it up but NOTHING COMPARES TO LIGHTERLIFE they were disgusting- and I'm not fussy..but they made me physically vomit, plus you don't get the support and counselling and are unlikely to succeed. LIGHTERLIFE IS WORTH EVERY PENNY, £10 A DAY FOR 4 MEALS!
TOTAL This is the initial part of the diet, where you only have 4 foodpacks a day, you can also drink water, black tea (any tea from a leaf) and coffee, you can also add the lighterlife flavour owders to your water too which adds fibre. In the foodpacks there is ALL the vitamins, minerals and trace elements you need, as well as enough protein to keep your muscles healthy while you are losing weight. It takes a few days to get into ketosis I'd say 3-5 but once you are there, you feel IN CONTROL, HO HUNGER PANGS, and you are in fat burning mode!
The first weigh in you should expect a big loss, my first week last time was 11 pounds, this is mainly water and the energy from your liver which is stored wet. This loss spurs you on to the next week, where it will start dropping off!
It works out with four foodpacks to 520 calories a day which is within the 'safe' range according to the powers that be. You can choose from shakes strawberry (rich and thick), chocolate (could make up with mint tea for choc mint!), banana (which when made up hot makes a cracking custard!) and vanilla (you could always keep a sachet a day to add to coffee to make a latte) There are also soups and bars, although you only have one bar allowed per day as they are slightly higher in carbs. All delicious anyway which makes the diet a pleasure to do.
You have a health check every month, I'm lucky as my councillor is a nurse so she does it! And from day one, you start on a group cognitive therapy and transactional analysis which works to unravel your relationship with food and try to change negative thoughts into positive change.
When you lose all your weight, lighterlife are always there to re introduce food safely and support you in your new LIGHTER LIFE!
Lost 2 stone with which I'm pleased. However, support from counsellor and meetings cannot recommend. In my case the counsellor did not stick to the programme, was certainly not inspirational and did not take the views of the group into consideration. More about what was easier for her. I have decided to leave and go it alone.Counsellor was overweight which did not help. In my opinion it needs someone who has been through the programme and maintained the weight loss and looks good. Someone to aspire to.
Right , this aint a review as such , but kinda looking for abit of advice , Im on day 4 of LL total and my stomach is still really rumbling and Im hungry , I know its not habit as my stomach is making all the noises and it aint just in my head !
Im not finding it difficult to stick to the 4 food packs a day , just finding it strange not eating , if that makes sense , I would be able to follow this for full term if my stomach would hurry up and stop rumbling !
If anyone could give me a kinda of idea on how long it takes to stop gettin hungry and kicking into ketosis it would be much apreciated because if I actually keep gettin hungry I cant see me sticking to it . even though I really want too or should I say I really need too.
well if a fast weight loss is what your after.lighterlife is for you!!...i did LL 4years ago and lost 3stone in 7 weeks and never felt better!....Due to my own neglect and getting 'comfortable' in a new relationship i have put some weight back on,so i'm on it again,3 days in now,and must say its alot harder this time, but i'm determined!!...When on it last time i didn't have the bars and seemed to lose alot quicker than the others so i plan on doing that again, and also drinking plenty of water seems to aid a greater weightloss!!...so here goes for a simmer me in afew weeks!!
LighterLife is a VLCD, very low calorie diet on which you can expet to lose at least 3 stones in 3 months and yes it works. You have 4 meal replacements a day that are either milkshakes, soups or bars, the calorie and carb content are very low and after a few days you will be in Ketosis where your body is burning fat.
Your body needs "energy" from food to run, it will first of all use up easy to reach energy from food recently eaten, once thats gone it will use up "glycogen" which is stored around the liver and once that has gone it will use the fat. As your body burns this it produces "ketones" which it flushes out in urine sweat and saliva, hence why you will get bad breath, also one of the reaons why you need to drink plenty of water.
Water intake should be 3-4 litres a day NOT ALL AT ONCE, imagine your body is a waterwheel, it needs little and often, it is dangerous and pointless to sit and drink it all at once, it will be of no benefit.
Downsides - The first week is fairly hard, especially day3/4 whilst you are detoxing from all the junk you are used to but once you are in ketosis you really do feel fine. Socially it can be awkward going for a meal but not impossible, some people take their soup along but I chose to just avoid going for meals, I still went to the pub and drank water. I did get a bit of hair loss at the very end of the diet but it was nothing major, just a few extra hairs in my brush and it's now back thicker than ever, I certainly didnt get bald patches or anything like that. Yes it can get boring but a bit of boredom for a few weeks is far better than living with the side effects of being overweight.
Plus points - Rapid weight loss is the main thing, it falls off, I went from a tight size 18 to a comfortable 14, I have tried every slimming club going and soon lose interest losing half a pound a week! You will receive counselling at your weekly meeting looking at why you have gained weight and your issues with food, I found this bit very helpful. Your life really does change when the weight has gone, your health is so much better and your confidence is sky high.
People say the quicker you lose it the quicker you gain it which is a MYTH, scientific studies have proven this, the only way you will gain it is if you over eat, it's a biological fact, if you eat more calories than you need you will get fat. If you eat the right amount of calories you can easily maintain it.
Lighterlife isn't for life, it's a tiny chunk of your life to make your life better and I am living proof it works.
The LighterLife Weight Loss Program will set your body up for a lifetime of health and weight issues if you do not die first. The 500 calories per day is way to low to spare lean muscle mass from being used for fuel (your heart is a muscle). Consider instead seeking out professional nutrition advise from a Registered Dietitian that is educated in establishing your calorie needs and will help you work on behavior modification. You did not gain weight because you were hungry, you gained weight due to unchecked or ignored emotions. Deal with emotions and portion control and you will maintain your health and weight for life. Due to the extra weight I'm carrying my health is suffering and it's now becoming necessary to lose the 2 stone I've gained (on top of the 2 stone that I'm carrying around) and I'm seriously considering doing lighter life, however I run a cake business, I make chocolates, I write a food blog, I review restaurants - I'm also going on a 2 week cookery holiday in July. I was thinking of starting LL and doing it for a month, taking my holiday (eating as normally as possible) and then starting again. Has anyone ever done this starting & stop (so soon into the program)? Has the weight jumped back on or have you managed to keep going (despite a blip?
