Disadvantages: Cost

Hi!! Have just finished my second day of abstinence and I feel good so far (no real hunger pangs). Thursday was my first meeting and my counsellor was very honest about lighterlife said it wasn't going to be easy at first but it really would get better after a couple of weeks. You are required to have a form signed by your GP to state you are fit to do a vlcd before you start (some gap's charge for this. I paid £30) and blood pressure checks every month during abstinence. My doctor was very encouraging and said that she had seen quite a few people start lighterlife diets over the last three years and had seen good results, but also said be careful at the end and find some way of monitoring and maintaining the weight loss by joining Weight Watchers or something similar

Ok the food packs.... the thing that worried me as I am such a fussy eater and hate milkshakes and cuppa soups, 4 packs a day, yesterday had a raspberry hated it then had another later in the day made with ice cold water added ice cubes much easier to get down, Thai chilli a bit too coco nutty but ok, Today vanilla with ice tasted a little like ice cream or cream soda so ok, chicken soup not nearly as bad as I thought it would be!!! After a week or two you can have bars and the water flavouring fruits of the forest or st clements

I think the trick is to find 3 or 4 packs that suit you I don't think I'm ever going to like them though a lot of lighterlifers do and find a way to eat them that agrees with you.

You need to drink 4 litres of water still or sparkling and can drink black tea (no fruit tea) or coffee which suits me fine. You need this to stop you from getting dehydrated and to prevent constipation.

It costs £66 a week which I know sounds horrendous but I know I must spend £50 a week on Chinese take aways, fish and chips etc and especially chocolate my real addiction and this includes cognitive therapy within a closed same sex group for 2 hours once a week trying to assess your relationship with food, discovering your reason for overeating so you recognise the difference between physical and emotional hunger.

I have read many blogs and forums about lighterlife, which helped me no end, and there are plenty out there and most are very encouraging just google lighterlife and you'll find loads of them. For me the decision to do this was a person who lives in my village who has lost 17 stone over 10 months and looks fantastic, a completely new person.

I am a realist, not easily a sucker for any old fad diet, I am very determined to see this through and now I've seen and read what it can achieve for others and I although I have only been doing this for a couple of days I feel positive I will.

Summary: Give it a try

Hi, I've been on the diet 10 days and I've been to a 'drop in' today. I have managed to loose 14 pounds in that time! Its fab! stick with it.

Hi Sam

good luck to you and the LL programme, VLCD are recognised by the national obesity forum and guidelines are in place on acceptability. Yes LL does meet the requirement :)
If loosing wt via diet and exercise was hugely successful then there wouldnt be so many over wt people would there? The reality is that LL works quickly and because of this people do stick out the 14 weeks and succeed. The maintaince then I believe will be harder because you have to work hard and change how u use food, i.e not as a fix for stress :)

I say good luck to u, GP's do recognise the diet and I can also tell you there is a NHS similar that is used if surgery is needed quickly. so it cant be as bad as some make out.

It should be an individual choice, I wish u all the best go get that goal :)

Hi again I lost 11lb at my first mid week way in I know that's a lot in such a short space of time, but I do have 4 stone to lose and I feel good. No headaches or lethargy as of yet. Makes me determined to finish.
