Advantages: you have great satisfaction giving blood, you know it will save someone
Disadvantages: altered to appointments
For years I used to watch my Husband go and give blood every 3 months and think I wish I was brave enough to do that. Then one day, I cant remember the exact reason but he said come on in and wait for me. So I did and it was nothing at all like I expected it to be. When the next blood donoring came around I decided it was about time I gave. I was in my late 30s by then. First they sit you down and ask you all relevant questions about what illnesses you have or havent had and if you have had any piercing or tattooing done. Then you have your thumb pricked and this will tell them if you can give blood or not. I then went to a bed. The Nurse knew it was my first time and did not mind that I looked the other way when she prepared my arm or while I was giving blood. Before I knew it I was lying on the bed waiting for the 10 minutes to be up and I could have a cuppa and a biscuit. It was as easy as that but the feeling that I had actually given blood was great. My children started to give blood the minute they were 18. Now though they have changed the rules a bit and you can make an appointment to give blood instead of just walking in. In my view this now has made the whole thing take a much longer time. The queues are longer and I do know that in our area a lot have stopped giving. They are only open till 7 and if you leave work at 6 this makes things a bit awkward. It was better if you could pop your head around the corner to see if anyone was waiting while you were down to the shops and if no queue go in. It is still great giving though

- 01/11/01 You have to be careful with the illness thing, don't want to give an already weak person a nasty virus. |
