Advantages: Beautiful places to see

Disadvantages: None

The National Trust preserves and cares for historic buildings, landmarks and areas throughout Britain. I live in Northern Ireland and the trust here looks after some very important and fascinating places.

Castle Ward in Co. Down (with its dual styled faces, one classical, one gothic) and Castle Coole in Co. Fermanagh are classic 'big houses' with their demenses and palatial opulence. Other properties like Ardress House in Co. Armagh and Springhill in Co. Derry are quirkier and more homely but are still impressive. The Trust owns the famous Crown bar in Belfast and have just completed a thorough and painstaking restoration of this wonderful Victorian gin palace. Other places in the care of the Trust here include a printing press, a spade mill, many acres of coastline and the beautiful and spectacularly sited Mussenden Temple.

There are many highlights of the Trust's properties in Northern Ireland, in number perhaps there are few but each holds a fascinating and valuable tale to tell, not only the stories of the rich but those who worked the land and in their houses.

Summary: Worth a visit
