Advantages: Lots of savings

Disadvantages: Some popular stores don't offer discounts

The NUS extra card is available to college and university students for the small fee of £10 (though some bank accounts and student unions when you do some work for them will provide you one for free) and entitles you to a wide range of discounts for all sorts of things a student may need.

Applying for an NUS card is quite simple, in that you can just go on to their website, fill in their online application form and it will be sent out either to you, or to your student union for you to pick up - which is handy if you're just moving in to halls! Or alternatively, you can just head down to your student union and ask to purchase the card.

There are absolutely loads of discounts available with the NUS extra card, the one's I've received the greatest savings from are the amazon.co.uk discount - 5% which is very handy when you've got loads of books to buy or for present buying over Christmas, 10% off in Superdrug - handy for various cosmetic items, 10% off at Topshop and New Look - well, we all have to buy new clothes sometimes after all and another 10% off at Office, because when you wear that favourite pair of trainers all the time, they do ware out eventually!

Other handy discounts include reduced price driving lessons from AA and one I see being used quite often - a free hamburger, cheeseburger or McFlurry from McDonalds when purchasing a medium meal.

These are just a few of the discounts the NUS card offers. There are many, many more and their website is the best place to find out whether you can get any money off in your favourite store, or at least, where you can find a cheaper alternative. Having paid £10 for my card, I can't even keep up with how much money it must have saved me over the past year. Definitely worth investing in one!

Summary: Save, save, save!

Great review!
I am a part time student whilst also working, I tried to apply for a NUS card last year but had no luck as they don't seem to like you if you aren't full time :(.

I wish the card got a greater discount at the cinema. I remember when prices were £3.40 at my vue back in the day. Now even with student discount they are around £6. I'd say they are worth the investment if you are sociable and hang around places where you can take advantage of the 10%. Nice review.
