Advantages: lots of discounts

Disadvantages: not much money off

The NUS card (National Union of Students) is a student card for peaople that attend college or university that gives you discounts at certain shops.

The NUS card costs £10 per year and they run out every August, so it's best the at you get it early so you can make the most of your discounts!!

The NUS card entitles you to discounts at a number of places such as Superdrug, most cinemas, amazon, Dorothy Perkins (yay), Newlook, Matalan, Halfards and the list goes on.

I often use my NUS card when I go to the cinema or ice skating because it doesn't take a huge of amount of money off for you but if you save the amount you're saving over a year from discounts, it would be a huge amount.

You can apply an NUS card at www.nus.org.uk/NUS-Extra/. Its dead easy, all you do is fill in an application form, make the £10 payment, upload a photo and they send your NUS card to your learning provider.

The NUS card is also a good form of ID so if you haven't got a passport or driving licence I would recommend you get one, not everywhere would accept it as ID but most places would.

Summary: good to have saves you money

yeh it was free and I think it's only in recent years you have to pay, cus when i enrolled at college like 5 years ago it was free but when enrolled again last year i had to pay a tenner.

since when did they start charging for NUS cards? mine was free when I went to uni and you automatically got one as a fresher, all you provided was the photo for it. i rarely used it though

It's worth noting however, that your student id card issued by the uni is an nus card as well, so you actually can get the discount in all the mentioned shops using that without having to buy the nus extra card, if you are just getting student discount in shops then it's not worth paying for it when you have an nus card already issued for free. The nus extra just entitles you to a few extra bits, like cheaper youth hostels abroad etc. It's only worth buying if you are going to use it for the extra stuff.
