I needed a copy of the invoice for my seven large windows I purchased from the Original Box Sash Window Co twenty years ago. Amazingly they could provide one from their archives! I felt I must write a review as I have this month had the outside of the windows painted for the first time since they were installed!
The decorators commented how well the paint had lasted and what extremely well made frames they were.
Twenty years on and they look brand new.
We live in a third floor flat in central London with quite a bit of traffic noise in the front and the new windows are spectacular: not only have they reduced any drafts to nil, but they have also reduced the traffic noise so much that we do notice it at all. Moreover, being a Grade 2 listed building, we were not allowed (by law) to have double-glazing, so Box Sash have recommended laminated glass, which seems to have the cut the noise equally and has the advantage of protecting our furniture and pictures from harmful UV rays. Last point: the house dates from 1860 and the first windows lasted 100 years, the second lot half that time and they had relatively thick bars between the panes of glass. Box Sash have taken us back to the thinner and more elegant 2 cm bars, which have the advantage also of letting in more light.
We are very pleased with our beautiful new windows and we have really noticed the difference in our now draft free rooms. The customer service has been fantastic with attention to detail in all aspects of the process and the workmanship faultless. It was a substantial investment but very much worth it.Thank you!
i would like to add my comment to the other reviews shown, the windows look fantastic and make a real difference to the warmth and noise levels in the house. Everyone I've dealt with has been both knowledgeable and courteous, I am really happy to have chosen Original Boxsash for this very important spend.
I had a replacement triple box sash fitted in my Victorian property at the beginning of this year.I found the companies approach from start to finish to be extremely professional and I am very happy with the finished product which is both cost and noise efficient.I would not hesitate to recommend this company.Julian
I was entirely satisfied with the installation of new windows in my 14th century Listed Building property, work which was carried out in April 1999 at the cost of around £26,000. I was so pleased with the work that I recommended this company to a neighbour of mine. That is a decision I bitterly regret. My neighbour has subsequently had problems with his installation; these are the problems I have had with mine. The windows have been repainted every 5 years since installation with microporous paint, as recommended. In August 2012, I identified wet rot in the window frames. A specialist in Listed building repair work investigated and, coincidentally, cracks appeared in the glazing panels of 9 of the windows. His report was submitted to the company along with a covering letter from me; their response was completely dismissive and boiled down to blaming me for causing the problems by failing to carry out adequate maintenance. Subsequent investigations reveal:
1) Nails securing the tenon joints had corroded, leaving timber in the area in poor condition.
2) The angle at which some of the windows were installed in this old property (because some of the walls are not a true vertical) had compromised the efficiency of the sills.
3) The tight margin between sill and bottom rail created a water trap.
4) The draft control strips in each window allowed moisture to be retained which soaked into the oak frames.
5) The glass had been fitted so snugly into the frames that any movement of the house was likely to cause stress fractures. I am awaiting such stress fractures to happen in the remaining windows.
This experience has turned out to be a disaster. I am seeking further professional opinions on the quality of wood used in the original installation as well as the quality of the glass before resorting to legal advice with a view to obtaining some sort of satisfaction through legal processes. I would strongly advise anyone not to use this company for window installations which is a shame as the original installation was carried out in an exemplary manner and I thought I had bought Rolls Royce windows that would last me a lifetime. This has proved not to be the case and the arrogant and dismissive manner in which the company has responded to my predicament has been a real shock to me.
I am delighted with my new windows from the Original Box Sash Company. The workmanship is just superb, all the windows have been finished to an excellent standard, and they are everything I hoped for. I live in a conservation area, so the windows were custom-made to match the existing, but with the advantage of being double-glazed. They look great, and I notice the extra warmth in the house, and also considerable noise reduction. They are smooth and easy to open and close. The fitter, Steve, was professional, hard-working and considerate, and his workmanship is of superb quality. The job took only three days for the whole house, and Steve made sure there was no mess. I am very happy with the work, and would certainly recommend the company to my friends and neighbours.
We were very pleased with the casement windows installed by the original box sash window company.Everyone we dealt with from the company was extremely helpful and professional. All promises were kept and the installation was painless. Or fitters (Jeff and Simon) were very quiet, considerate and efficient. We would have no hesitation in recommending the company to our friends.Mr and Mrs Lloyd
We are delighted with the French Doors, Front door and casement windows that the Original Box Sash Window Company have just fitted in our home. They live up to the promises that their representative made to us when he first visited us to discuss our needs.
The whole process was completely painless - no mess and no loud builder music, just punctual, polite and helpful fitters (both of whom were called Simon). The surveyor who took the exact measurements was very efficient. He made sure that styles, colours etc. were correct and I had to ok and sign each point he had set out on a written list. I got a carbon copy of the list which ensured that nothing could be added to the list at a later date.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this company to our friends and family.
Our house has been restored to it's former glory (minus the cold and draughts).
Mr. and Mrs. Moore.
We are very pleased with the installation of our new windows and were particularly impressed by the professionalism of the fitter, whose workmanship, care and thoughtfulness have been most welcome. We would be happy to recommend The Original Box Sash Window company to any of our friends or family considering new windows.
I don't make a habit of writing comments on jobs and services i have done, but on this occasion I felt compelled to do so.
Firstly, please let me say how delighted we are with our new windows and the excellent work you have done refurbishing the old ones. We have a builder on site at the moment (who also does windows apparently, and he said they are some of the best he has ever seen.)
Secondly, the filter you sent was brilliant. He was extremely professional and friendly, very efficient and so clean and tidy that I didn't know he'd even been working on the windows when I came home. We also let him store some of his materials in one of the rooms over night, this was also done with extreme care and tidiness which was breath of fresh air after all the other workers we have had in the house lately (and their lack of tidiness!).
We approached them about double glazed windows to reduce noise for our front master bedroom. The salesperson claimed their windows were 'acoustic' and said we 'd be amazed by the noise reduction. Their website made similar claims. However, there was no noticeable improvement. REALLY disappointed, total waste of nearly £15k on windows for just one room. We regret not using The Sash Window Workshop who were much more transparent about the glass they were using in their quote ( Pilkington Optilam Phon glass which is proper acoustic glass). The Original Box Sash Window Company give their own brand names to their glass so it's impossible to verify what you are getting and leaves you reliant on the salesperson or website claims. We definitely wouldn't choose Original Box Sash Window Company for noise reduction again!
I spent £12K on some new windows in 2002 from The Original Box Sash Windows Company. A year later the draught proofing fell off and 7 years later one of the window glass cracked - they tell me I need to pay for the labour cost of £300 to replace the cracked window unit as only the parts are covered under guarantee.
Obviously I am very disappointed that the window had cracked due to the defective and poor workmanship of this Company and I am not happy of having to pay for their labour cost after spending £12K with them for a window to break with less than 10 years usage! I wish I spent the money on UPVC as I'm sure it would have been more long lasting.
At the time of installation, they only had one installer to fit the windows by himself, which I only found out recently that the installer did not fit the windows correctly as he left huge gaps to the exterior of the window which should have been properly sealed and covered. I pointed this out to the Company as I suspect the poor installation had something to do with the cracked unit but they were not interested!
I will definitely not order from this Company again due to the poor workmanship, installation and aftersales service. Save your money and stress later on by using a different company. Completely useless!
Having read the negative reviews above I just had to write of my experience as it has been so very different. Having had all my sashes replaced with double-glazed units I can only say what a painless and pleasant experience this has been. From the salesman to the fitters, pleasant, prompt, curteous & tidy. They went out of their way to fit in with my lifestyle! I received quotes from a number of other Company's all willing to do the work but none of them could get the slimmer weights to enable the sashes to fully open, unlike the OBSW Co. or with the kite marked acoustic glass for reducing noise levels. A job beautifully done!
After contacting the company, we were highly impressed with the windows offered, they met our requirement to be in character with the house and were fully double glazed. The surveyor was comprehensive and the quotation met all my requests. The fitters arrived as agreed and completed the job quickly and left our house clean and tidy - I can't thank them enough. After reading the other reviews I felt I must write as I would not hesitate to recommend this company to others.
