Advantages: Lose weight, look good , feel fit
Disadvantages: face some truths
Here I am again, it’s Monday and its “weigh in night”. I think I have been good, no, wait a minute. I completely forgot about that packet of cheese and onion crisps. Oh! And then there was that piece of cake, a Twix, half of a pizza, and a large portion of chips. Still, I must go tonight because if I do not get weighed, I will eat even more. I have always had a weight problem ranging from Michelin man to Jiggly puff and as a last resort I decided to go to a Slimming World class. I chose Slimming World because you don’t have to weigh all the food and you are allowed to eat a lot more food compared to other clubs. My first night at Slimming World went well, people were friendly, the consultant was very welcoming and nearly everyone was big. As far as I was concerned this was fantastic, they were all like me. I didn’t have to suck my belly in, or hide my size 16 labels. Here I could let it all hang out and it was wonderful. On the first night you fill in the relevant forms, pay the joining fee and then pay £3.25 for the class. You then queue up to get weighed and this is the best part. Everything you have eaten flashes through your mind.”Did I eat too much? Had I drunk too many glasses of wine?” The moment of truth arrives and you step on the scales. Now you would think stepping on scales would be easy, not if you’re a slimmer it’s not. You suck your belly in, hold your breath, hold your head up/down, lift a leg or go on the scales twice because you don’t believe the result the first time. Oh! I almost forgot, some slimmers would recommend a visit to the toilet before hand (It’s been known to make a difference of 2lbs, well it was a big one!) After getting weighed you then sit down for the Image therapy session. Not everyone stays for this. Most get weighed and make a run for it but I look at it this way; I pay £3.25 each week so I am going to get as much support as possi
ble (and boy do I need it). When everyone gets weighed, the Image Therapy session starts. The consultant talks to each member (in front of everyone). They state if you have lost weight, how much in total, if you have stayed the same or put weight on. The class will clap everyone to give him or her encouragement and the consultant will help you if you are going through a difficult time. A lot of people think if you put on weight (and I have many times) you will be humiliated in front of the whole class, this is not so. Everyone rallies round to give helpful advice; they know exactly how you feel. At the end of the class the consultant will go through the Healthy Eating Plan booklet, which explains in detail the Slimming Worlds diet. Very simply the diet consists of Meat days (called red) and pasta/rice/veg day (called green). You can choose which day to follow, but you can’t mix the two. There are “free” foods, which can be eaten in any amount, they really come in handy when you are feeling peckish. Other foods like crisps, cakes, chocolates etc can be eaten but they have a “sin” value. For instance a packet of crisps has 6 sins, a bar of chocolate can be 9 sins. You are allowed up to 15 sins a day. (Hopes this makes sense, if you go to a class they will explain it fully). Slimming World has a good selection of recipe books and a big food directory, which records the sin value of all supermarket foods. This is a must when you go shopping. Slimming World will give you all the support you need to help you choose a healthier lifestyle. You will not only look and feel good on the outside but will also feel fitter on the inside. Losing weight is more to do with how you feel about yourself as a person. If you learn to love yourself you are less likely to reach for those biscuits. Slimming world is not a miracle cure. It takes courage, determination and loads and loads of willpower. I have lost a lot
of weight but each day is a struggle .I have to change my bad eating habits and stop using food as a comfort. To all those people out there struggling, keep with it, you can do it. Now put that cream bun down!
