Advantages: So much food, The ability to eat as much veg lasagne as I can stomach, Unlimited chocolate yoghurt!

Disadvantages: Chocolate and crisps are still restricted

Well, well, doesnt it seem that time of year for resolutions, getting a man, changing jobs, becoming more independent, and those old chestnuts, giving up smoking and losing weight! Well I'm doing the smoking (yes there is an op on that) a whole week without a cigarette, yippee! But I also want to lose some weight as well.

Slimming World is undoubtedly the most successful I have ever used, you lose weight if you follow it, simple as that. No magic tablets, creams, milkshakes or cures, just good food, interested, well read on......

THE BASIC PLAN
Its divided into two basic plans, there are Red Days and Green Days, this has changed from having just red days as it was felt vegetarians werent being catered for.
On RED days you can eat as much beef, lamb, pork (inc bacon), chicken, turkey, seafood (inc fish), fresh fruit, most vegetables, very low fat yoghurts and fromage frais!
For those of you who arent great meat eaters there are GREEN days in which you can have unlimited pasta, rice, potatoes, baked beans, pulses and grains, vegetables, fresh fruit, very low fat yoghurt and fromage frais.
You dont have to stick to the plan, you can alternate the days but obviosuly you cant change halfway through a day!

HEALTHY EXTRAS
You have to have these to make sure your body is getting all of it vitamins, and fibre. ON the Green plan you choose 3 extras, one of which has to be a dairy product and the others from a huge selection including bread, cereal, fish and meat. The 3 healthy extras on the Red plan again includes a dairy product, but also breads, cereals, pasta, potatoes, etc.
As you can see no food is forbidden, even if you are following the Green you can still have meat, although in limited amounts and on the Red plan, vice versa.

But its not all bad.
SINS
Unfortunately named but an essential part of the plan. You have between 5 and 15 Sins a day, the usual is 10 which you can then spend on absolutely
anything. You can use them to supplement your main meals with bread, cheese, meat, pasta, etc or use them on goodies! For example a Quality Street sweet has 2 sins, so you can sit in from the telly and eat 5 thereby not feeling hugely guilty or you can save them up over the week for a special treat. Mine tended to go on Whoppers which have a massive 46.5 sins.!

It does sound too good to be true, but it really easy to get the hang of, you'll be surprised at how much food you can eat. For exampl, for Breakfast I had bacon, poached eggs, mushroom and 95% fat free sausages, as much as I liked!!. For lunch I had a huge chicken sandwich, if I'm still hungry I will keep picking at that chicken. For dinner I will be having a massive chicken stir fry. If I feel peckish I can nibble on more chicken and slices on ham. For a sweet snack Mullerlight Yoghurts are completely unlimited and they have started doing a chocolate flavour one, try that with a chopped up banana, I'm told its lovely!

This diet works for me because I am not a huge fan of fruit and vegetables and I dont have to eat them if I dont want to! I also dont have to worry if it gets to 6pm and I find I have no calories left to eat anything else in the evening. I can eat as much as I want when I want!! Obviosuly the bad thins is that I cant eat as much chocolate, cake, biscuits, and crisps as I like, but they arent 'banned' or 'naughty' foods you just have to incorporate them into healthy eating.

THE CLASS
I dont attend one because there isnt one by me now, so I'm afraid I cant give you up to date details of the price but that is on their website, but I still have all the literature, I can also buy the magazine (i'll review later) and go on the website (www.slimmingworld.co.uk). The classes are really friendly, the leader has either lost weight or is losing it, when you are weighed complete privacy is assured. YOu get a little book which records you w
eight loss (or gain), unlike some clubs there is no pressure to leave if you keep putting on weight. You can get a food diary, a sheet which look at where you are going wrong, and the leader is always happy to discuss these with you or take them home and give you feedback for the next meeting. Within the class itself there are friendly discussions on what causes weight gain, how it makes you feel, how to gain more self confidence etc. They really make you feel like you are part of a group and the support given is really impressive.
Once you have reached your ideal weight, which is decided by you, you can keep going to the classes free of charge, it is only when you reach 10lbs above your ideal weight you have to start paying again.

The first week I started this diet I lose 10lbs, in a week!! I then went on to lose 2 stones and never felt deprived, unfortunately lack of willpower made me give it up! Now that I've started it again 2 years later I'm hoping to lose at least 3-4 stones and honestly believe that Slimming World is the best way to do it.
If you still arent convinced pick up the magazine (£2.10) at your newsagents or log onto the website, give it 2 weeks, I think you will be surprised!

Well written op. I too am a fellow SW and so far I have lost 1.5 stone in 3 months (yes, over Xmas as well). I ABSOLUTELY love it! Re the debate about balanced eating - As Emma has already said, on the same day you can eat both carbs and protein. But essentially, why this works, is because it is about choice. Nothing is forbidden. As far as I am concerned, SW has invested alot into the psychological research into the way overweight people's minds' work - hence their success. Good Luck!

You do use all the food groups everyday, except some you use more than others. You are also advised to use both the plans throughout the week in order to get full benefit. But I can see why some people are critical of it, and I think your comments are just as valid as everyone elses grinch!:-)

Oh! Looks like I'm on my own in thinking that a balanced diet means using all the food groups every day and not alternating between them!
Wasn't criticising you at all, I just think it's important to get into good habits so that you don't put the weight straight back on.
