Advantages: Group support, education

Disadvantages: Addictive

Having been a slimming world adviser, then writing my own diets, having them medically approved and setting up my own clubs and also, having been near anorexic in my life but now size 18, I have come to a conclusion that others might disagree with.

I spent years trying to help women lose weight. Those women, just like I did, thought that if they were slim they would be happy. That was rarely the case. I trained as a beauty therapist, believing that once I helped others lose weight I could help them learn to make the most of themselves, give advice on skin care and makeup. Still didn't work. I would not like to say how many women I know who have lost weight then left their husbands or their husbands left them! How many, although happy with their weight, had more time to focus on other problems in their life which they did not like.

Dieting can take over your life and make you a very boring person. You will never be happy with your weight until you are happy with yourself, your life. You cannot lose weight for other people, you must do it for yourself.

Dieting is not about cutting down on what you eat for a few months, it is a lifestyle.

Dieting is not about denying yourself particular types of food, it is about being moderate in all things but, more important, you must enjoy what you eat and eat it because you want to, not because it is only what you are allowed.

Slimming clubs, books and products cost punters millions every year. There are those few who successfully educate themselves into a way of eating which helps them shed excess and maintain a size acceptable to themselves.

Don't be a bore and moan about not being allowed this and that. Putting on a pound is not life or death...take a look around you and see some poor souls...the skinnies of this world...who would love to put on weight but can't.

Use the slimming club simply as a support, a temporary one. Learn something from
it but most important of all is learn to love yourself regardless of your weight. Learn to be a good person, the rest will take care of itself.

Being overweight might well be a root cause for many diseases. However there are many diseases that cause a person to be overweight (underactive thryroids, Polycystic Ovaries to name a few). However because the world is so obsessed with being thin, many people with 'fat making' diseases are not taken seriously or are ignored, thus going uncured for a long time. If people could just accept that they are what they, people who do have a genuine problem would be taken seriously and treated.

Weight matters to a certain extent in that if you are grossely overweight you put your heart under strain, and are at increased risk of heart attack, diabetes, and a number of other diseases. It's important to keep it in perspective though! I'm size 18, and would like to go down to that perfect 14...

Thank you for all your comments. Re nikkisly...my mum, who is size 18, went for a fitting for a bowls skirt and was told she needed size 26! I think clothes sizing and changing room mirrors should be debated too! And another thing, weighing scales should be banned...NEVER have one in your house. Love who you are and what you are, smile at people and treat them as you would wish to be treated...what does weight matter?
