Advantages: help thousands of cats
Disadvantages: can't remove mistreated cats
I love cats and have two of my own so it's no great surprise I regularly support Cats Protection. In fact my Auntie used to have some rescue pens in her garden (alongside a cattery she ran) that saw over 3000 cats go through them in the years before she retired so I'm aware of just how many cats these people help every year.
Cat's Protection are big on neutering and spaying, with good reason, this of course would reduce the amount of cats without homes in the future. They take as many strays in as possible each year and if a cat is mistreated and removed from the owners by the RSPCA they often end up with Cat's Protection.
One thing I wish they could do is have more power to remove badly treated cats themselves, they currently have no influence on this and if you were to take them a cat that's being mistreated they cannot take it if you tell them the cat has an owner and if you aren't sure if the cat has an owner and the owner calls about the cat Cats Protection have to give the cat back so they have little power in respect of mistreated cats.
I have taken a few strays to Cats Protection over the years, the lady who runs our local branch is amazing and if she can squeeze another one in somewhere she will do. She also seems to know most of the local cats by name! If you call her regarding a stray you've seen she is usually aware of it already and will call you back with an update once the furball is homed or safe within the pens of one of her volunteers.
I visited a volunteer's home once to view the progress of a cat I'd taken to Cats Protection and it's like feline heaven! Cats and toys and beds and bowls of food everywhere and in amongst all that purring, snoozing happiness was the skinny little bundle I'd taken in, no longer a skinny little bundle but a fully grown, big lad by this point. It's really satisfying to see how much they help.
I sell raffle tickets for cats protection each year too and always buy bits from the Xmas catalogue. Another way to help that many are unaware of is by using this link to search the web:
http://www.clicknow.org.uk/CatsProtection
This search facility generates extra money for cats protection without costing the user a penny so if you can't afford to give any cash this is a way you can help. (Please do!)
I think they do a wonderful, selfless job and rehome thousands of cats every year. Fantastic people and organisation.
Summary: wonderful organisation so please use the link!

- 16/08/08 I agree it is a great organisation - I remember getting my cat (well, my mum's cat since I left for uni) from them. I don't think she would have survived without them. |
