Advantages: Responsible
Disadvantages: Is vets treatment always carried out?
When I didn't know what to put as my username, my first thought was Bessieboo, the nickname of my gorgeous cat Bess, who came from a Cats Protection Home.
Our local branch puts a regular piece into a local newspaper updating readers on the progress of their cats, and even from just this you can see what an amazing job it is that they do. The centre carried out a check on us, to be sure that we had adequate room for a cat, and that we weren't on a main road. They seemed genuinly concerned about checking ours was the right home for her, a very shy and vulnerable cat, because of her small size.
When we went to collect Bess she was in a large pen of her own, with a heat pad and a scratching post, and she seemed quite content. However, when we first brought her home, she needed vet treatment very quickly on her teeth, which made us wonder why this hadn't been picked up on at the home when they usually do provide treatment.
Also, when she was kept overnight at the vets to have them removed, she refused to come out of her pen until my mum went to get her. I think this suggests that she might not have had a lot of loving attention at the home, and it was frightening for her to recieve this from a family and then suddenly (from her point of view) be put back into a pen alone.
However, the work they do is amazing, and they only ask for a donation when you adopt a cat. They are very responsible in checking out new homes, and have a system of putting collars on possible strays so that somebodys beloved pet won't be accidentally adopted.
Summary: A worthwhile charity

- 20/10/08 My only cat came from the Cats Protection. She had been horribly treated in the past, so it was great to be able to offer her a home and the people at the local shelter were lovely with her. |
