Advantages: Lots of different ways to help out and donate
Disadvantages: That we don't have enough homes
When i was a child i always wanted a dog but when i was 12 a stray black cat wandered into our garden eating the scraps my Dad put out for the birds, first she was let into the kitchen, then downstairs, finally she took over the house and is still with my Dad to this day and so began my love of cats.
I have 2 cats, Izzy who is 3yrs and 3months and Spencer who is 2yrs 5mths and i couldn't imagine my life without them. I will say though they are not rescue cats i got them as kittens from someone selling them.
In January this year i decided i wanted to do some volunteer work for an animal charity, sadly there are no local rescues near me and i don't drive so can't get to one easily so decided to volunteer at my local Cats Protection League charity shop for the Bedford & Biggleswade Branch and this is my review of the charity shop.
I volunteer every other Saturday between 10 - 3pm so approximately 130 hours a year but the shop is open every day between 10 - 3pm apart from Sundays.
Our shop is based in Kempston, Bedford and we sell everything you can imagine, clothes, toys, books and larger items such as furniture and everything is reasonably priced, whatever money we make is profit (apart from overhead costs) as all items that are sold are kindly donated by the general public.
The shop is only small but has a homely feel to it, we have a lot of regular customers and all the volunteers are true cat lovers willing to spare there time and often personal belongings for the cats of Bedford and beyond.
We even have our own shop cat called Phoenix who is not a stray but he spends all day with us having many cuddles and some food too, he knows he is in the right place!
I hope to become a fosterer for the CPL in the future when i have the room too as we need many more, unfortunately there are always going to be more cats than foster homes but if you can spare your time or home to help the CPL you are helping a very worthy cause.
If you have a shop or rescue centre near you go see how you can help.
Summary: Please help the CPL!
